Is "ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5470 – 1GB" not compatible with "i7 Processor"

Because some days ago I checked in "dell India" site while "customizing" laptop (Choosing i7 processor), during options of "Video Card" it shows the message to select "2 GB" video card as "1GB" card is not compatible with i7 processor.

Is it so ...? So why they had "i7" combination with "1 GB ATI" graphic in "Dell Studio 1558" The same model I purchased in June-10 & also faced some abnormal behaviour of "graphic" during "Gaming" or "Video editing work".

Now the option of "studio" Laptops also not available to buy in "dell India" site.

Did they "cheat" the customer by "not revealing" this issue when they sold a lot of "studio 1558" laptops during last 1 yrs.

Is there any solution or some replacement to be done from "Dell's' end, if there is such a problem (incompatibility issue of "i7 & 1 GB ATI Redaen Graphic card).

Please give your valuable suggestions & help me.

The 5470 is most likely soldered onto the board. Dell sometimes will do that, make XX GPU not "compatible" with XX processor. I guess it's their way of up selling something. Also certain GeForce motherboards may need i3/i5 for Optimus, while quad core Clarksfield i7 don't have IGP so Optimus won't work.

    On what system model?

I have a pair of Studio 1558's with Core i7-740QM CPUs and the HD 5470 graphics (one built that way by Dell, one I upgraded from an i5) and they both work fine.

You can't get the integrated graphics on an i7 because those CPUs don't have the graphics chip on-board - compare CPU pictures and you'll see 2 smaller dies on the i3/i5, but one larger one on the i7.

Dell (well, Quanta - their contract manufacturer - actually) hasn't built any new 1558's in some time. The last time many config options were available was sometime last November. Since then Dell US has had only one base system model (i5-450 if I'm remembering right, with integrated graphics only). Even that one seems to be gone from their web site now.

Any new 1558's from Dell would be from that remaining stock and not very configurable. Of course, Dell Outlet (refurbished, etc.) 1558's could have any configuration, depending on how they were originally sold.

Will call it a selling strategy or stock out situation, instead of compatible.
