To run Windows Vista comfortably, disregarding the ram for a second, is 1.6GHz C2D sufficient? as opposed to 1.8 or 2.0 GHz. Obviously 1.8 and 2.0 are gonna be faster, but for the basic user is 1.6 enough? thanks.

stupid vostro deal is up to 699 now

Yea, you won't have any problems at all. Just make sure you get 2GB RAM for Vista

I use to have an Inspiron 640m with a 1.6GHz C2D processor with Vista Home Ultimate and it was surprisingly fast. I later upgraded the processor to the 2GHz version and saw very little difference in basic Vista functions.

should be plenty.. you'll need a decent video card to run Aero though.. new intel integrated graphics renders Aero pretty decently.

1.6 and 2GB and you'll be zipping through stuff.

You may need the "e-value" code to get the advertised price. You can check the "As advertised" (or whatever it's called) section on the Dell site.

Do you think upgrading to 4 gb to be worth it?

I will be using the lappy to game (oblivion / medieval 2: total war).

I heard Vista uses up 50% of the ram. I just want to be safe with the ram (don't want any slow downs).

    Thanks.

Using Vista Ultimate on my desktop - upon boot up, it uses about 30% of the 2GB that I've got installed.

Right now, with the following applications open, it uses 53%:

    1x Firefox
    1x Photoshop CS3
    1x Dreamweaver CS3
    3x Windows Explorers
    1x Internet Explorer 7
    1x Outlook 2007
    1x Windows Media Player 11

The regular Vista stuff's running as well, the sidebar, Defender, etc.

4GB is probably not necessary if you're just gaming.
