Try installing XP on your Vostro and see if performance increases.

Are you using the same browser? If you are using IE 7, turn off the phishing filter (in the Tools menu) for best performance.

Also, your desktop probably is faster in some ways... the desktop's hard drive should be significantly faster. Laptop hard drives are just slow. So the desktop may very well feel snappier, load programs faster, etc. for that reason.

Try cleaning up the vista installation, removing spyware and unnecessary applications in the startup.

I highly doubt you'll achieve much success with tweaking given that an 8 year old machine is already faster at this point.

Learn how to do a clean install of Vista - or pull out your hair trying to make it marginally faster.

I think it sounds like you have to put in battery mode or something?

If it started behaving this way after six days of use, which I presume includes significant web browsing, I strongly suspect a viral or malware infection...viruses like virtumonde or vundo are fairly prevalent examples of bad adware that can s l o w the fastest machine into a mutant turtle.

Also, run taskmgr (press ctrl-shift-esc), look at the Processes tab, click on the CPU column (maybe twice) to sort by CPU usage, and see if anything's hogging the cpu.

I don't think there's much bloatware on the Vostros (unless you selected it when configuring) so reinstalling the OS probably won't matter much (although of course you can try it if you like).

not sure if you have already checked. but make sure it's in 'Performance Mode' instead of 'Battery Saver' mode.

Do this by clicking on the battery/plug icon down in the bottom right hand corner of your taskbar. it will have all your battery settings. if it's on 'Battery Saver' mode it will decrease your computers performance significantly.

    Good luck.

ITS NOT RUNNING IN BATTERY SAVER MODE, INFACT ITS RUNNING IN PERFORMANCE MODE. MOREOVER I MOST OF THE TIMES KEEP IT PLUGGED WHILE USING AND MODE DETAILS SHOW PLUGGED IN PERFORMANCE IS ALMOST SAME FOR ALL BATTERY MODES.

Well, without trying it yourself, we can't really tell you that. You could have defective components or it could just be the OS. Maybe check the temperatures of your notebook components? CPU/GPU/Chipset temps?
