I am buying an XPS 15 in a month or so, and there are very few configuration choices in Norway, compared to in the US. If I buy the version with a 256 SSD instead of the 512 the price difference almost covers an SanDisk X400 1TB, so I get twice the storage for roughly the same money. Would that be a smart upgrade, or is the real world speed too bad on the SanDisk? The use will be general student hipster use. It's my daughter's high school graduation gift, and she wants something that looks as cool a rotten Apple but runs an operating system that she's familiar with, and I am totally comitted to getting the XPS for her after a discussion in another thread. So probably quite a bit Netflix, a bit of GTA and a lot of word processing and regular websurfing (from Facebook via Instagram to Googling and reading of scientific papers online). I could of course go even higher with an Intel 540 or even an Intel Pro 5400 but that means that the money are starting to burn a bit more. Still, if the difference is large enough I can be talked into that.![]()
Oh, the 512 version of the XPS has 16 gig ram as well, but I really don't see that being an issue with this kind of use. No VMs or any stuff like that, and no use of Photoshop or other memory hogs.

Here's what CrystalDiskMark had to say about the 1TB X400 that I installed in my Latitude E5570 a couple of days ago.
It's not the best performer among SSDs but it's no slouch either. A 1TB SSD with empty space (it is best to leave at least 10% unpartitioned to help with garbage management) is going to maintain its performance better than a full 500GB SSD. I reckon it will be fine for the anticipated workload.

That Sandisk will be more than enough for her uses. It has typical performance for a Sata 3 SSD. Go for it.

Thanks, guys!
I will! Then she should have more then enough space for all her photos and music and games and just about everything else.
Is SanDisk X400 1TB much slower in real world use than the standard 512 in an XPS 15?
