If I want to install XP Pro on my new M4400 laptop and it only came with Vista Ultimate, assuming I have the install media for XP Pro, will the key that came with Vistal Ultimate work? My wife bought an E6500 with the XP Pro downgrade/Vista Business license, and I noticed the key for her is the same for XP Pro and Vista Business...

what does 10 char mean? I'm guessing you mean the Vista key will not work with XP... I guess what I was really asking was, if the OEM Vista Ultimate came with my machine, is there any way, without spending any serious amount of extra cash, to do the XP Pro downgrade? Someone suggested I might be able to request the downgrade disc from Microsoft..

the key wont work. his (10 char) means that the forum here requires a user to have a minimum of 10 characters in their post. He added that to make his post longer.

What I did to get a Full XP Pro disk was take an old PC I had with XP PRo on it like 6 years old I called Microsofts media replacement line. Told them the disk would not install for some BS reason.

They asked for some number that starts with an X on the disk or side of your PC case under the Licence number.

They said Ok, verified it and cost me $35 bucks for a brand new Retail full version of XP Pro with SP2, shipped to my door.

Good question- I'll probably keep Vista. However I do rely on some drivers for some hardware that haven't been updated Since Windows2000, which luckily still work under XP without modification, but I'm guessing won't with Vista.. Amazing I still use that stuff...
