So i didn't get any of the grainyness, but my Tilting viewing angle is horrible. (not sure what to call it). I have to sit looking exactly straight ahead at the screen, if i move/tilt the screen even a little, my black become very washed out, and my color's totally fade away leaving a very wash-out image.

I installed Bioshock & i could'nt even play it, because the dark shadows/graphics & such were so washout.

I've messed around with the color/gamma/brightness levels and such, but nothing has worked.

Do i just have a bad screen, or is this normal?

BTW Way i got the matte finish XGA screen. (the low res one 1280x800 i think) becasue i didn't want the grain, but i got instead bad backlight bleeding washed thingy instead.

Is there a pic that has a good viewing angle to it?

Every pic you have here has horrible angle to it.

If you tilt screen against your view, you really shouldn't be expecting a good viewing to beging with.

Yeah, you need to provide a picture of it dead on for comparison. And yes, you should be using it dead on, if you're playing a game with the screen at an angle you have a problem.

I don't know if this will make you feel better, but my 1280x800 matte LCD has the same problems as yours: backlight bleeding and horrible vertical viewing angle.

It's not that bad, for a laptop LCD, though.
But I would have expected something better nonetheless.

...you get what you pay for! From those pictures, I *think* that's "acceptable" for Dell...although it IS a Vostro, and if you're not happy, you can exchange it.

you knew what you were getting. those viewing angles were specified on the spec sheet. Each more expensive screen you get is better angles.

A more expensive screen DOES NOT guarantee better angles.

    This is a blatant generalization.

According to Vostro 1500 specification, For WXGA, Horizontal viewing angle is ±40° while vertical is +15°/–30°. Most of your photos have a larger angle than that.

For LCD display in Vostro 1500 (or 1400), they are all considered standard LCD and have the same viewing angles as described in the specification of the manual. Only the UltraSharp ones (not available in Vostro) have larger viewing angles.
The current generation of "standard" LCDs are much better than those on earlier laptops. Althought they are not as good as the UltraSharp ones, the viewing angles are not bad at all. If yours does not match the specification described, ask for a replacement. Mine exceeds the specification a lot in the horizontal viewing angle though.

My 1400's viewing angles are pretty shotty. I have to tilt the monitor to nearly exactly where I can see my full head reflection, then I can see things properly. Maybe I am just used to my 2001FP, but the angles are definitely the worse I've ever seen for an LCD. I can see past it for the price that I paid though.

BTW, my screen is an SEC4457 1440x900, with no graininess and one stuck (red) pixel in the lower middle.

I got the exact screen. My vertical viewing angle is around +5/-25 (a bit short of the +10/-35), however, the vertical viewing angle is adjustable and 30 degree range is good enough for me. By the way, I have no graininess or dead pixel . To reduce glare, you may get a screen protector which would prevent scratch too. I ordered one from Dealextreme. The 14.4" one matches the dimension of SEC 4457 perfectly.

umm for this situation it does! research it before calling someone a fool!

the wxga has the worse viewing angles. the wxga+ is more expensive and has slightly better vertical and horizontal angles. the wsxga is the most expensive and has the best viewing angles.

if you believe anything dell has to say about their laptop screens as of late- you must be a lucky one with a good screen...

i, for one, don't believe anything dell says anymore. not on their website, not on the phone, not even the explanation for bad LCDs from Mikey D himself.

    get a True life...........much better viewing angle...(remember, i review my own 17"...not 15")
here is my wxga+ 17" True life...the colors are awesome, also the viewing angle.
i also started with a matte screen...Dell replaced it to this True life...
(BUT Dell have also really good matte screens....their matte LG-Philip 17" is awesome)

(the image is taken with a SE k800...so with a real camera it looks of course better)

hey thanks for the replies. I tried to take pics that are indeed at a greater angle than the specs, just to compensate for my crappy camera.

these pics show the viewing angle with just a slight head tilt forward or back. I have really bad light bleed too. the viewing angle is so bad that I can't even use my built-in camera & see my face on the screen at the same time, without loosing all color & contrast.

I tried to contact dell tech support (the 24hr line) and they said i need to all customer support (open M-F only) for a replacement.

The tech support told me i basically have two options.
    1) send the laptop back & they will send me a new replacement.
    2) send it back for a refund, then re-order a new laptop

Is this right, can;t I just get the screen replaced?

-also does anyone know if the LG is truly better for the viewing angles. I read that it is. Or should I evn try the tru-life screens as well? & has anyone had luck with specifying a particular screen, Then actually getting it???

    thanks. -james.

umm, u can move the angle of the camera itself w/o moving the screen at all
