Simple question... Does anybody have an e1705 LCD screen that they are actually happy with and if so what kind is it??

Also, does anybody have an LG Phillips screen that you are actually happy with?? If so, do you just accept the light leakage/defects or is it great-perfect quality??

    My story.....

I had a decent amount of light leakage at the bottom that cam eup about half an inch. It was very annoying while watching DVD's and that such.

Today Dell sent out a contracted computer repair dude and replaced mine free of charge and the new one looks even worse. Apparently you can ONLY get the LG Phillips LCD displays now (I asked if anything else was possible at all and got a "no" after dell support looked into it, I was hoping for Samsung or something.) The guy was pretty rough with the laptop too, maybe he just did a poor job of replacing it.

When I get back home from work I plan on popping it open and seeing if I can make it any better myself, but highly doubt it.... So now the question is...

Is it worth bugging Dell AGAIN and requesting another new LCD?? Maybe I'll even offer to install it on my own. I'm wondering how many more times I should bug them until I get something atleast a little better.

I'm guessing you also had an LG display both times??

From what I heard they no longer use Samsung because the price is double-ish the price fo the LG screens.... Gee, I wonder why!?!?!

On a side note, I ordered an e1705 with WUXGA about 3 weeks ago but ended up sending it back because it had the GeForce 7800 and the 7900 had come out... It had less light leakage than this display from what I remember.

I don't have any problems with my e1705. I don't know what kind of LCD it came with, but I'll poke around a bit tonight and see if I can tell.

mine is LG i see some light leakage in the bottom but i can notice only when the screen turns dark and is covered by toolbar most of the time. I am more concerned about its brightness it jsut doesn't seem that bright, maybe its because i am used to my LCD monitor?

i have a 9300 with a LG WUXGA screen. i love my screen. there is a little light leakage at the bottom, but it is very minimal. i remember people saying that the LG's had better color and contrast, where as the Samsung's had less light leakage.

You can check that out under device manager. Check under "Monitors" and it should be the last one in line.

hmmm, I was considering buying e1705 but the more I read about Dell the more I'm disinclined to try it. How on earth is it possible for a company such as Dell to get away with such a substandard product?

It is pretty disturbing isn't it. For every good thing I hear about Dell screens I hear two bad things. Not the most comforting thing to consider when about to order one of these things...

You're absolutely right!! :) Some people seem to be more than happy with their Dell laptops, others utterly dissatisfied  Right now I'm quite confounded, since I'm in dire need of getting 17 inches laptop. Dell e1705 l($1388 fully loaded ;) )looks like a great offer, unlike Toshiba P105-S921 for ($2000).

I just spent all morning with Dell's tech support regarding my E1705's nasty LG screen. I would have had it returned, but they were going to charge me a re-stocking fee if I didn't go through tech support first. So now I'm waiting to get my screen replaced...

For all of you looking at desktop-replacement laptops, Fujitsu will be releasing their Amilo Xi 1546 model sometime soon. It's a media/gamer-friendly 17" based on Intel's Core Duo and the ATI Mobility X1800. After having seen some Fujitsu screens in person today (they're stunning), I would say it's worth the wait. They also already have the 6410 model with ATI's X1400 if you don't care for gaming so much.

Yep, I'm in the exact same situation as you. The closest comparable laptop in price (the toshiba) is about $700 more, and that's with no warranty!

So let me see if I got this right. If you go through tech support first and try to get your problem fixed then you can return it afterwards without paying the restocking fee?

The Fujitsu seems pretty nice, but the real question, is how much will it cost?

I had an e1705 with WUXGA. I thought the screen was perfect--no dead pixels (a HUGE relief), and no light-leakage as far as I could tell. I did kind of wish it was a little more "wide angle" viewable though...

Unfortunately I don't know which manufacturer the screen came from and I already returned it for another reason--chronic BSOD crashes.

Yep. I called returns, told my plight and the lady insisted I goto tech support first or else I'd have to pay a re-stocking fee. I highly doubt my next screen will be any better, if at all, but I'll give them another chance. I'm done with Dell after this.

From various articles I've seen, some have said starting at around $1,500 (and that's with the X1800). Take it for what it is, just speculation, but also keep in mind that at least Fujitsu will be offering some decent alternative...One with a nice screen... and a normal keyboard! :)

I'm quite happy. The first E1705 WUXGA I received had the Samsung screen and the 7800. I returned it to get the 7900 and also to upgrade to T2400 (paid a total of $24 extra including the return shipping). The second one has the LG screen. I sat them side by side before returning the first one and my subjective opinion was the LG looked better and I was a happy camper. A couple of weeks later, having watch a couple of movies in a dark room, I'm still very satisfied with the display. Granted I was coming from a IBM T42 XGA 15 inch screen...that cost me $1800 2 years ago and I got the Dell as configured below for $1296 (plus $100 net to upgrade the RAM via newegg and ebay)...

You get what you pay for and sometimes more or less. They do seem to have issues with light leakage and quality overall.
Sagers are actually very good at least I've yet to run across one I didn't like
