I'm going to need a laptop for college next year. I would like to have one now, of course, but it is by no means necessary.

I've been looking at the 9300's and with a $750 coupon I have my price after s&h and tax down to $2,063 from $2614 on a pretty great system.

What I want from you guys is assurance that there will be a better option out there by next summer.

To me, $750 off sounds incredible, but I'm new to this.

Is this a fairly commonplace discount? Will the replacement to the 9300s come out by summer?

Basically, for the same amount of money can I get a superior product if I hold out until summer?

Thanks in advance for any help. :)

What are your specs for the 9300? That seems really high. I would wait because technology is always upgrading and since you dont need it now, something might happen between then and now and you might need the money for some reason.

I just bought a 9300 for college next year because i couldn't wait, but thats just me. the only big difference in my opinion between now and next year will be Windows vista coming out.

Windows Vista probably won't be out until the very end of 2006 or even beginning of 2007. Dell will be releasing new Inspirons in late Jan/early Feb with dual core processors and making other hardware changes next year. For instance, all of their laptops will come with ambient light sensors to dim/brighten the screen based on external lighting (PowerBooks use this) and they'll have the ExpressCard slot in most new laptops. So, yes things will change, I'd wait if I were you since you don't really need this laptop right away and there will always be deals.

Vista isnt going to be big anyway. Same NTFS, new Windows Media Player (works with xp), and some little stuff. And the min system requirements are out of this world (256mb video card, multi-thread processor (single core will still work), and recommended ram 64bit 2gb/32 bit 1gb) source: http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2005/09/07/vista_hardware_reqs/
