I swear when I opened the Dell box tonight to unveil my new 1420 I thought Dell screwed up and gave me the 1520. I don't have any 15.4" sized notebooks to compare to but this thing looks like a brick. I chose the 1420 in hopes it'd be smaller...
Thoughts? Anybody have another 14" to compare to?

i went to the dell kiosk just to look at and compare the sizes of the 1520 and 1420.
Both computers are big, but the 1420 is significantly smaller then the 1520 from what I can tell. -
Well it is kinda big, yes...but it's smaller than my E1505 which was pretty good for a 15.4" laptop so I think maybe it just looks big, I don't know...but I love mine!
-
It is the weight and the thick design of the notebook. Those are some chunky notebooks.

Looks to be about average size and weight for a 14" laptop.
Dell Inspiron 1420Dimensions: 13.13" x 9.61" x 1.26"-1.53" (Width x Depth x Height)
Weight: 5.39 pounds
Lenovo ThinkPad R61
Dimensions: 13.2" x 9.3" x 1.20 - 1.37" (335mm x 237mm x 30.0 - 34.9mm)
Weight: 5.2 lbs
Sony VAIO CR
Dimensions: 13.2 x 1.67 x 9.8
Weight: 5.5 pounds -
It's about the same size as my other 14". Though being widescreen it's a little wider, but the length is less. Like a square vs. a rectangle. The total area seems to be the same. The weight is also about the same. It is definitely not the 1520, which is an inch wider and heavier.
-
Is the thickness of the 1420 and 1520 the same? How much of a difference is there?
-
It's definitely big and beefy -- of course, I'm comparing it to a T60, which is particularly slim and sexy.

i went from an x300 (.9" thick lid closed) to the vostro 1500 and i dont mind at all its size. its not too big and bulky imo. its slightly fatter than other models, but its got one hellava cooling system built into these things. they stay nice and cool. i can leave it flat on a bed(which your not supposed to do cuz they over heat) and it only gets mildly warm. thats good cooling!
-
I too also have the Dell X300.. I stacked it on top of the 1420 last night and I looked so tinsy tiny
I'll have to take pics.
-
The 1420 is probably not that big, but the 1520 are really chunky! Lasagna chunky!
-
Just remember... there's only a 1.3" difference between a 14.1" and a 15.4" laptop.
-
And that's measured diagonally.
The 1520 is only .99 inches wider, .98 inches deeper, and .06 inches thicker.
(so basically, 1 inch wider, 1 inch deeper, and twice as fast, graphics-wise) -
Hum, I probably should have just bought the 1520 just to get the 8600gt and spent the $200 difference. Oh well, atleast the 1420 is 1lb lighter.
-
If you really wanted portable you could gone for the m1330 and waited 2 m onths.
-
The 1420 is a touch chunkier than most 14" notebooks, BUT you're getting rock solid build quality and great cooling, so it's a tradeoff, one that I'd be willing to make.
-
I was originally going for the M1330, but when I could get the 1420 for $1000~ versus the Dell M1330 at $2000~ spec for spec, or $2300~ for LED it wasn't even a matter of choice, it was sensibility.. I saved $1300 in the entire deal.

Is it just me or does the 1420 look like a 15.4" sized notebook?
