Hi all,
I recently bought an external monitor and keyboard and mouse to use with my Studio 15 when I'm working for long hours on my desk. Is there any way that I could turn my laptop on without having to open the lid?
At the moment I have open the lid, turn on/wake my laptop and close the lid back down(with the close lid action set to 'do nothing'). Is there an easier way?
Thank you.

You can go to the right on task bar and click on the battery icon. Click on "more power option".
On the left of the window which pops up click on "chose what closing wondows does"
Chose nothing for "what closing windows does"
I think after this setting you should be able to turn on the lappy with lid closed.
Bad thing is it will not sleep if you close the lid though -
Thanks for your reply but I've already tried that but it doesn't seem to work.

Stevie,
we just bought a new 1558 and I am setting it up with an external Dell monitor (HDMI output from laptop to the DVI input on the monitor). And of course we are using an external keyboard and mouse (bluetooth). I have a 5470 video card (1GB) and for what it it is worth, my laptop monitor is 720p.
I have the laptop setup for "projection only" and the power management for lid closed when plugged in is set to "do nothing".
With the above settings I had run into the same problem as you (I think). My problem was that when rebooting the laptop in the above configuration, the external monitor would initially work during the Windows 7 loading until the Windows 7 logon screen came up. At that point, the monitor would go dark for lack of a video input. No amount of mousing or keyboarding or playing with the power button would work. However if opened the laptop lid and then closed it, the external monitor would then come on and I would be able to see the Windows logon screen and the external monitor would stay on.
This morning I updated my BIOS from A06 to A08. The BIOS update was released yesterday (Jul 30) and the update notes did not mention that it would resolve the problem with the external monitor. I also do not know what A07 would have fixed which I presume is already incorporated in A08. But now after updating the BIOS, my power up sequence affects the monitor differently--mainly better. When I reboot the laptop with the same above configuration, this time the external monitor remains dark during the initial Windows 7 loading. However when the Windows logon screen is reached, the external monitor comes on and stays on. I would have preferred for the external monitor to be on from the very beginning of the boot up sequence in case I get a "Windows did not shut down normally" message that has to be dealt with.
With the laptop still under warranty, I had briefly considered calling the technical support line but I was not confident that they were going to be helpful based on my most recent experience in getting the LoJack activated.
I realize that we have different Studio laptop models with different BIOS but I hoped that my recent experience may give you some insight. Good luck and please let us know if/how you resolved the problem as I came across your post initially as I was also trying to research this issue.
Is it poss to turn my Studio 15 on without opening the lid?
