Is it possible to download applications such as PowerDvd and the various other apps that come pre-installed on our systems.
Or is it mandatory to request the disk from Dell directly?

I plan on using Southern Girls awesome How to on re-installing XP as soon as the box gets opened and I would like to start downloading all the appropriate drivers and applications if they are actually available

You can download all the drivers (support.dell.com) , but unfortunately you have to request all of the extra software. Eventhough you haven't received your laptop yet, you can try and request them. I think dell has gotten "friendlier" on that, and will send you the CDs before your laptop even gets there.
