Right now, I configured one and it's at a hefty $1,518... Here's the specs
Latitude D630:
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7100 (1.83GHz, 2M L2 Cache, 800Mhz Dual Core), English
Genuine Windows Vista™ Home Basic, with media
14.1 inch Wide Screen WXGA LCD Panel
1.0GB, DDR2-667 SDRAM, 2 DIMMS
80GB Hard Drive, 9.5MM, 5400RPM
8X DVD with Cyberlink Power DVD™
6 Cell Primary and 6 Cell Media Bay Batteries
Internal English Keyboard, English
Dell Wireless™ 1390 802.11g Mini Card
Resource DVD - Contains Diagnostics and Drivers for Vista, English
Standard Touchpad
128MB NVIDIA® Quadro NVS 135M
Dell Wireless® 360 Bluetooth Module for Vista
65W A/C Adapter
No Floppy Drive
3 years limited warranty, 3yrs Next Business Day Onsite Service
I want to cut 500 bucks off this price by downgrading specs and by bargaining on the phone. The possible things to downgrade:
T7100 -> T5470 (-100)
Vista Home Basic -> XP (?)
1Gb 2 Dimms -> 512 1 Dimm (?)
80Gb HD -> (do they have a smaller one?) (?)
8X DVD with Cyberlink Power DVD™ -> no DVD (put the 6 cell media bay battery in instead) (?)
3 years limited warranty, 3yrs Next Business Day Onsite Service -> 1 Year Return to Depot Service, Complete Care and Technical Support (-$199 to -279)
But are these downgrades even possible? I mean, they're not possible online, but what if I call them? And with these downgrades, is it possible to get a D630 for under CAD$1000 before taxes?
Thanks in advance.
Edit: Is it possible to get the 1Gb Robsin Flash into this thing?

i was told you dont get discont for OS change. I would cut down on the warranty and try and get than thrown in as a deal clincher, Its not impossible but to get 1/3 off will be hard and you going to have to push them a fair bit.
-
Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
Seeing as the base price of the D630 is already CAD$1169 I think it's gonna be pretty tough to bargain one down to CAD$1000. Specially the $1500 config you have there.
-
The thing is, the "base" D630 comes with the 3-year warranty and T7100 -- both of which I dont need. And those 2 combined alone should give me a $200-$300 price cut.
Also, I'll throw in the downgrade of 1gb -> 512mb RAM.
Unless they offer something even lower than 512mb RAM? I'd gladly have my laptop come with no RAM, but they probly wouldn't allow it.
I'd also love to reduce the hard drive they give me, or allow it to come with no hard drive at all.
The reason is because I'll handle both after-market in any case. -
Read my article on How-To beow; its ideal for the method in which you are trying to deal.
-
Good stuff, flamenko. I read your guide once before and found it really useful, but then I lost the link to it. Thank you for linking me to it again.
-
It will be inpossible the starting price is $1200 -
Well, I'm going to try downgrading the following:
T7100 -> T5250 -150$
1gb -> 512 -50$
3 yrs warranty, 3yrs Next Business Day Onsite -> 1 Yr Return to Depot and Tech Support -279$
24x CD rom -> no optical -?$
So.. It's in theory possible to cut 500 off. I know, reality usually never follows the ideal, but it's worth a try, I guess. -
No way - first off, I doubt they'll let you downgrade many of those options, which are base options with the laptop.
Downgrading warranty is most likely not possible as 3 year is the base. Margins on extended warranties are very high, and there's little chance they'll 1. let you downgrade and 2. even if they downgrade, give you the complete value of it they would charge for you to upgrade. -
That's going to be really tough and don't they make you pay for shipping on Latitudes since it's the business end?
You could probably grab one off ebay for under $1000 if you're patient. -
Next time you buy a car, try downgrade your standard tires to four donut spares and ask for a discount because you'll never drive faster than 80km/h.
I really doubt Dell is going to go lower than their base configuration. -
Why do I need standard tires when the car's engine doesn't even have the ability to go over 20km/h?
There's a difference between not wanting to drive over 80, and not being able to drive over 80, I guess. -
The point remains however that Dell has setup minimum configurations which can then be improved upon/upgraded. I would find it really strange for them to go DOWN from their base configs.
You may not NEED standard tires.....but since that's what it comes with, that's what you get.
Do you buy half a bag of potato chips at the corner store because that's all you want? -
No point in arguing on; I'll try it and see for myself, it won't hurt to try... I have to agree that it's weird, but I heard that you can configure a laptop with more options by phone than online, so who knows? Maybe the minimum config online is not the minimum config by phone.
-
I guess the point is why go so bare bones on a d630 when you could get a much more powerful machine for under 1k. The d630 is nice and all but you gotta draw the line somewhere
-
The only thing stopping me from getting a Vostro is the media bay battery; I need the extra battery life provided and yet not sacrificing mobility (which the 9cell batt does -- sticking out and all)
-
I guess I don't understand how mobility is sacrificed by using an extended battery.
I've got the 9cell for my m1330 and it by no means affects the mobility or limits where I can take my laptop. If anything, I would think not always having a CD/DVD rom available would be more of a hindrance to mobility than the battery sticking out a bit.
As previously mentioned, spend the amount of money you want, on something else that will end up giving you a better experience overall.
It's like you're trying to fit a square peg through a round hole at the moment and it seems really unnecessary. -
