I have a Dell Inspiron 7348 which takes the smaller connector. I have a converter that allows me to use the larger standard size Dell power adapters which I have used without even thinking about it. This converter dongle allows me to use an HP power adapter, both output the same voltage 19.5. The Dell compatible adapter I am currently using which did not come with the machine si a 45w, The HP is 90w.

I think the output voltage is what is important the 19.5v but the amperage is different , the Dell is 2.31A and the HP is double that at 4.62A. I notice different amperages on different adapters listed as compatible. Is it safe to use the HP, don't want to fry my laptop =)

I would not recommend using the HP adaptor. If the amperage was the same then i'd say go for it, but since its double I wouldn't risk it.

Its also possible it will do no harm and just draw as much power as it needs, i'd have to test it for myself though.
