Is it safe to leave a laptop running 24/7? I am a college student and I bought a used Dell Inspiron 1100 back in September. I also have a desktop which I have always used for documents and projects, but I liked the idea of the laptops portability so that I can take it to the lab and such. Outside of that, there is not much use for it. I am very resource conscious on my desktop because I am a gamer. I do not like things to run that will slow down my system. So I started running apps like GAIM, IRC, and Bittorrent on my laptop. I always left it on. Now recently, I noticed the fan has been coming on a lot. So I figured maybe its not the best idea to leave it on. I have seen conflicting reports as to whether its a good idea to leave a laptop running 24/7, but I just want to make sure I'm not slowly killing my laptop by leaving it on. I also read someplace where they said that leaving it on kills the LCD faster because there is a lot of heat coming out of the keyboard. Any truth to that and what does everyone think of leaving it running all the time? Thanks for your help.
Heres my specs:
Dell Inspiron 1100
Celeron 2.4Ghz
256 DDR RAM
40GB Hard Drive
Running SuSE Linux 9.2 Pro
I do not have it go into standby else my connection to the internet is lost and that is the whole reason that I leave my laptop on, so I just set it to turn the monitor off when the lid is closed.

Leave your laptop open (clamp) and shutting down the LCD and running 24/24 would matter....my brother is running his latitutde C410 24/24 and downloading most of the time....and has been doing for 3 yrs...no problem up to date

letting your laptop hibernate when you're not using it is a just fine option. It's true that over time the more heat exposure components get then the more likely they will be to break, but it depends on the quality of build of the laptop. With an Inspiron 1100 I'd probably want to let it hibernate or turn it off if not in use for long periods of time.

Leaving it on all the time won't hurt it any more than leaving a desktop on 24/7. Turning on power saving settings such as turning the HD off and hibernation is a good idea.
The reason your fan is coming on more often is caused by dust. Take a can of compressed air and blow out the vents around the fan. Use it from all angles. That should fix the problem.

Is it safe too...
