Over the past couple of days my Inspiron 9300 has been acting quite strange... Let me start by saying once an app is open it runs perfectly... Now here are the areas I am noticing issues:
1. Its very slow in start up or coming back from Standby/Hibernation.
2. opening the "start" menu and browsing round the apps is slow
3. my network adapter lost my profile with all of my locations and logins.
4. I did a check disk with auto fix and that took an age
5. I tried to do a defrag and although the "analysis" say I need to defrag within 5 mins of starting the process I get this

I have already backed up all my files so if my laptop dies its not going to be that bad, but does it sound like my HD is starting to go bad and should I start looking for a new laptop?
thanks for any help.

Your fragmentation does not look that bad in all honesty. What does the report say? You may want to try a 3rd party application like Defraggler or O&O Defrag. Try running HD Tune or HDD Health to see about your SMART status. If you plan on keeping your 9300, a $50 hard drive upgrade will ensure you are running one of the faster laptop drives and may put your mind at ease.

Yeah, take a look at the defrag report for the files that cannot be defragmented. From the defrag map, it looks like you have a lot of fragmented system files-MFT, pagefile etc - the many green fragments, and that can cause slow access to files. You'll need a third party defragger to defrag those since the windows defragger can't.
IMO, do this in the order:
-disable hibernation if you have it enabled, so that the hibernation file is deleted.
-run a disk cleanup using the in-built utility
-run a full chkdsk /r just to be on the safe side
-download and install the Diskeeper 2009 pro trial from http://www.diskeeper.com it will defrag all the files including the MFT and paging file. Works for 30 days for free.
-run a manual defrag with Diskeeper, or let it run on auto, with directory consolidation enabled. It will also defrag most of the MFT if it is fragmented
-once the normal defrag is done, run a boot-time defrag to clean up the paging file.
This should do the trick.
You can re-enable hibernation if you wish. -
Guys,
thanks, cleaning up the start programs, running Spybot, Adaware, CCleaner, RegCleaner, Easyclean, Auslogics Defrag and HD Tune, I seem to have resolved the issue.
thanks again.
Is my HD starting to go?
