Not sure if this is the right place to post, but on my xps m1330, sometimes after I use Mediadirect and then boot into Vista, I'll get a black screen with the "Your C: drive needs to be checked for consistency" message while booting. After it finishes checking my C: drive all is well for a while, but if I use Mediadirect a couple more times, eventually I'll get the same problem again when booting into Vista. Is Mediadirect screwing with my Vista partition, or is my hard drive simply dying, or is there something else? Is there some way to find out what's causing Windows to run chkdsk?

It happens because you improperly shut down your computer. Shut it down properly!
It can also happen if the power is cut, or applications that were not shut down properly as a result of the computer shutting down improperly.

If you had followed the Windows Vista Tweaks guide and set that Shutdown time in your registry to a small amount of time like 2 seconds, it would cause the PC to be shut down before software was exited out properly, which also causes it.
