After MINIMAL use of the touchpad, it would appear as though the left mouse button is starting to malfunction........I now can only use the right side of it or else it wont register the click, and when I am using it occasionally it will start to select everything like I am clicking and dragging because the button never came completely off the plunger. What should I do? The touchpad is kind of a big part of the computer if I didn't have my bluetooth mouse and I needed to take this somewhere........it wouldn't be terribly easy.

Hmm... try re-installing the touchpad software again and see if that helps.
If not, contact DELL if you think it's a hardware issue.( Which it sounds like)
P.S. Do you have Bios A08?(Helps touchpad, but only software-wise, of course.) -
I have a vostro 1500 that is 2 days old.....something very odd is going on with the touchpad. After suspending, it and opening the lid, the mouse jumps around all over...like it's extremely sensative, and sometimes it seems to select everything, as if the right mouse button is depressed while dragging.
I didn't notice this behavior with Dell's factory load of Vista Basic...but even after rebooting, it happens in Vista Utimate ...no amount of adjusting properties seems to resolve it either.
I did install Dell's toucpad driver, even though the default Vista one seems to worked fine...I wanted the little touchpad icon in the system tray...
I am gonna uninstall Dell's and let Vista use it's own if I can....if that doesn't resolve it, will try see SP1 fixes it....else, this thing goes back! -
UPDATE:
Bowlerguy...your problem seems very similar to mine. My touchpad does the whole "button pressed while dragging" deal but also "jumps" while moving.
It looks like Inspiron 1520 owners have this problem as well as Vostro and XPS owners.
After searching...it seems two important things have been established:
The problem seems to only occur when charging (and as you would normally have it...with the battery installed). That is to say...if you remove the battery, leave the laptop plugged in...the issue goes away...if you have a fully charged laptop, unplug the charger...problem goes away.
According to MANY user AND Dell...there is a fix...Dell is replacing the charger/adapter.
Please see these threads:

and

Hope this helps somebody....
P.S. I just tested my own system...sure enough...if I remove/unplug the charger once battery is charged...no strange touch pad behavior....I can't get the mouse to jump around. -
Dell replaced the adapter for my Vostro 1500 and I no longer face the problem.

It sounds like you might need a replacement of your touch pad assembly OP.

So.......my issues regarding just general use of the mouse clicker button stem from the AC adaptor? My problem isn't when it's been on for awhile or when it resumes from sleep or anything, it happens at random times where the left clicker button will seem to stick or something and either, fully depressed, not drag or drag and not stop. So it's pretty hit or miss.

Booji,
Did you read the threads I posts....or ignore that part? The problem for the Inspiron's and the Vostro and some XPS units is to replace the A00 Flextronis power adapters. My problem is NOT a bad trackpad. Unplugging the power adapter from the charged laptop completely resolves the issue of the trackpad jumping around, selecting of unwanted areas etc. -
Bowlerguy...no promises man....but I have had what seems to be a similar situation occur to me. When scrolling or moving the mouse across the desktop area...it would on its own accord, decide to select a big area..as if I had pressed the right mouse button while dragging. I disabled click-drag...same problem remained. I unplugged my A00 Flextronics made Dell AC adapter...and it immediately got better.
Have a read of those Dell forum threads I posted man. Might be your issue as well.
Good luck...keep us updated please. -
My Vostro 1700 arrives Monday although it appears the problem is tied to the 15" models which use a different adapter. If I develop a problem with my 1700 i'll post it here as well.

Dell Inspiron with Rev A00 Lite-On, got a replacement even though its a few months out of warranty with a Rev A04, tech-support was wonderful and the one who I spoke with has already dealt with more than a couple of these kinds of "power problems" as he called them. Dell FTW!
Is my touchpad going already?
