I just placed the order for one - 5450 processor, 2GB ram, 160 5400RPM drive, 1440x900 screen, integrated graphics. I've read a lot of negative posts here since placing my order (mostly about the screens and the size of it) which makes me wonder if I made the right decision with the 1520. Are the screens worse than any of the run of the mill Toshibas or HP's I could get at my local retailer? When people say it's grainy, what does that mean? Or are these negative posts typical for anything discussed on the internet? I bought a Nikon D80 in November, and it's a fantastic camera in every way, but from some of the posts you read you would think it's a real POS.

The screen (1680x1050) is very grainy, it is cloudy on white or any light color backgrounds. It is like there is an oil layer on top of the screen. For 1440X900 I dont know if there is any problem with the screen, I haven't heard any complaints about 1440x900??? The 1520 is kinda bulky and heavy, I would say it is good for desktop replacement (in my opinion) not good for travel users. I didn't test the headphone jack because I already returned it.

I'm not really concerned about the size, but if the screens are like you describe, that doesn't sound good at all. I'm wondering if the 1440x900 or 1280x800 LCDs are the same way? I've never noticed that on any laptops anywhere.

the 1440x900 Screen is just as bad as the WSXGA unfortunately. I got mine with 1440, Dell is picking it up for a refund next week. Go with the HP, HP's screens are average, Toshiba's are above average with Dell's being below average.

1440x900 also is grainy, and I understand that so is 1280x800. I'd say its marginally worse than "run of the mill Toshiba or HP". 1520 has good performance for its price, but I'd recommend you to look elsewhere if you want to use of your Nikon D80 with it.
