I am looking at buying a laptop and im on a tight budget. I am concidering the cheapest I6000.
Some of the critical specs are:
Intel® Celeron® M Processor 360 (1.40 GHz/1MB Cache/400MHz FSB)
15.4 inch WXGA LCD Panel
256MB Shared DDR2 SDRAM 1 Dimm
Integrated Intel® Media Accelerator 900 Graphics
All the positive reviews I see of the I6000 are with the Intel® Pentium® M Processor 725 (1.60 GHz/2MB Cache/400MHz FSB) or better.
The I6000 with the upgraded chip is out of my price range so getting it is not an option. Basically I would like to know if the BASE I6000 is still a good computer and worth getting. All I will be using it for is Office stuff, maybe looking at a few pictures, web, email, etc. I read on one thread that xp will not run on 256 memory. Is that really true?
My first time on this site and I love it!
Thanks

Get a better processor Pentium M 1.6 minimum and at least 512 megs of ram and you should be okay

That is my spec Inspirion and I hardly note any degradation running Office 2003, Firefox and various net apps I give it a thumbs up. Bear in mind I got 512Mb DDR2 RAM. With the Integrated Graphics I was still able to run GTA San Andreas with good graphics and high frame rate too.

That configuration should be fine for your uses. But I would suggest getting 512MB RAM. Win XP will run on 256MB RAM, but the system is going to be slightly sluggish & slow.

The 1.4Ghz is good eunf for your needs , 256 Mb will do fine.... i dnt think yr notebook will run slow.
To obtain the best performance out of the modest config i suggest u to do a clean install... -

Not bad for the price. For basic tasks it will be just fine.
Definitely get the 512MB of RAM as everyone else says - that is one option you should get. Dramatically increases Windows performance.
Happy buying! -
Ditch the Celeron and get the base Pentium M. That plus 512 MB of RAM (remember, the integrated video will steal some, so doing only 256 MB is a HUGE no-no) will be a nice system.
Celeron-M is pointless...there's no Speedstep in it, so the battery life will suck. -
I saw 256K of memeory at newegg for $28. Is installing my own memory pretty easy usually? Or is the only way to get the memory upgrade on the Dell sight when I buy it?
-
Yeah, just get that. Installing ram is VERY easy, and much cheaper than buying from Dell. You should be set after that!!
Is the BASE model of the I6000 any good?
