I'm having conflicting information from dell whether the Dell Inspiron 9300 with the 17" Wide Screen XGA+ is glossy or not. Anyone who has this laptop with the WSXGA+ screen please let me know what kind of screen they recieved.

If it doesn't say anything about "brightview" or whatever they call it at Dell, then no, but I am not sure, it may be. Hopefully someone over from the Dell forum will answer, that's why I moved it here.

You have two options one is the 17 inch UltraSharp™ Wide Screen XGA+ Display(WSXGA) and the other the17 inch UltraSharp™ Wide Screen UXGA Display with TrueLife™(The glossy one).

The latter is a $100 upgrade(or downgrade - depending on your comments of glossy screens)

yea look for specific words to see if its glossy or not. in dell's case it would be known as truelife.

Thanks for clearing that up for me.... For anyone who has the base WSXGA+ screen, is it still a pretty nice screen without the glossy stuff? I've read some ppl don't like the glossy look when it comes down to actually using the notebook.

I might be wrong but I think the "WS" just stands for Wide Screen. According to the dell website the two screen options for the 9300 are: 17 inch UltraSharp™ Wide Screen XGA+ and 17 inch UltraSharp™ Wide Screen UXGA Display with TrueLife™

I'm wondering why the Dell goof told me the XGA+ has the glossy screen when it doesn't. The other dell person I talked to didn't even know what I meant by glossy. Go Dell Customer Support!

well...i would have gotten the glossy look if it wasn't for the $125 price tag for it  ...otherwise...i love my regular WXGA screen that's non-glossy for my screen...it's a great screen...and tons better than my desktops screens :D

yea its all good. depending on what you want. i bought the one with the truelife for my laptop and i have a secondary monitor that is the 19in lcd from dell that is non glossy. i prefer both, just sometimes i like the glossy in special conditions (for example at night) its a lot more vivid. :)

The WXGA+ screen is not glossy it is ultra sharp and not the true life, the WUXGA is glossy if thats what you like , personally I dont. Also the WUXGA is way to high a resoution for general use, I would steer clear of it, having used both I can tell you its a pain in the behind!!

WSXGA is not an option available on the 9300!!

1440x900. It's WXGA+. And those who have said there is no WSXGA option on the I9300 are correct; it comes in only WXGA+ and WUXGA (1920x1280, I believe)

    For those asking about abbreviations:
WXGA = Widescreen E xtended Graphics Array
WSXGA = Widescreen Super-e xtended Graphics Array

    yea
    WXGA-1440x900
    WUXGA-1920x1200

    lowlymarine...i think WUXGA is 1920x1200....not 1280 ;)

the WXGA+ on the 9300 runs at 1400x900 and is more than adequate for a screen this size. It has a matte finish whiich means you dont see yourself in the screen or the lights in the background for that matter. Dvds and games look great contrary to what some people who dont even own a 9300 will tell you.

As I haven't seen the XGA in person, I wouldn't really know how to compare it to my UXGA, but from all the discussions about this, I'd say you have two choices,

    A) The "zoomed out" look of the higher resolution, with a glossy screen.

    B) A lower native resolution with a screen that is less reflective.

A week now after recieving my WUXGA screen, I love it. It took a few days to get used to the widescreen, coming from my 17" standard CRT, and after using the MS Cleartype tool to adjust the print contrast, I'm completely comfortable with the 1920x1200 resolution for long periods... in fact after reading this and playing with my res settings for a bit, I prefer it. The only complaint I have is that you can almost use it for a shaving mirror outside on bright days, but bumping the screen brightnes back up from battery mode makes it bearable.

I'm not sure how much better the XGA is on that issue, but I guess if you plan on using your comp outside a lot you might lean against the UXGA. I honestly haven't had ANY problems with the gloss or reflections under artificial light.

Im lovin my wxga screen, plenty bright and sharp graphics, dont even need cleartype :p

I dont think I could stand a resolution any higher, there is already plenty of space on the screen

Just go to a store and find each type of screen and choose which one looks best to you

Ooo, good point. I didn't really factor that in, did I?

Last time I was tested I was still 20/15... better than normal. Score another point for the XGA :p

I have very poor eyesight and use 15.4" WUXGA. So much clearer than low definition screens. Once it is set up right, the high definition screens are fantastic.

1400x900, folks all fo this information is very handy at the dell website under the tech specs for this model. I suggest you take a look at them to answer all of your questions.
