    Hello all:

I am considering the Dell Vostro 1520 as a laptop but I am confused about the windows upgrade option (I would get Vista Home Premium to be able to get it as a start). Here's a link to the page:

    http://www.dell.com/us/en/business/.../pd.aspx?refid=laptop-vostro-1520&s=bsd&cs=04

I was under the initial impression that any dell laptop sold in the few months before Win 7 released would be eligible for the free upgrade. But when I look in the lineup there's one that says "Windows 7 ready" for an extra $140?? Is that the only one that gets the free upgrade? It's not really free then and why not just buy it separately?

    Thanks!
    Curious

Because the free upgrade is only available after the official date Oct 22nd, that's when they start shipping worldwide

It will cost you more to buy it separately. ;)

If you want to purchase your Vostro, purchase it it now and it enjoy it! :)
After you have purchased, register as instructed at dell.com:

Dell Window 7 Upgrade Options - Purchase! Register! Upgrade!

10/22/09, really not so far off!

So, yes it *essentially* is free with purchase!

Only Windows Vista Home Premium, Business, and Ultimate get free upgrades to Windows 7. That's why the third option on that page is marked as "Windows 7 Ready", since the first two only come with Vista Home Basic.

Tax depends on where you live. Shipping is usually free.

Is this going to be an upgrade key or an oem key? I just got my XPS the other week and planned on formatting. Was wondering if it would be okay to format with Windows 7 now and then just activate once they send me the disc (or maybe they would give it over the phone?)

from what i know they're sending discs out. once you register on the dell win7 upgrade site it says they'll send you an email with instructions how to get the disc when the discs are ready to ship. i doubt they will give you a key over the phone.

It's true. Small shipping fee and tax.
But if you are like me and saved the log in info on your desktop and have had to format. GOOD LUCK. The forgot user name to log in to check your status is worthless. Almost as much as the dell support. Looks like I am going to loose out on this. ALL BECAUSE OF A LOST PASSWORD.
