Is the M1530 the laptop for me?

What kind of performance should I expect out of an XPS M1530 with the following specs:

    Core 2 Duo T7800 (2.6)
    Vista Home Premium
    3 GB Ram
    160 GM 7200 RPM HD
    256MB 8600M GT
    Sound Blaster HD

And how much of a gaming performance increase would I notice between different CPUs? Let’s say 2.2 vs 2.6 (since they both have 4MB cashes.)

I need something with good portability for college, but I also want to play games reasonably well. I’m looking for something that’ll run Oblivion well. I’m also looking for a computer that can handle the new Unreal Tournament at High or High to Medium settings.

Should I wait for the 15inch Alienware m15x? Of course that’ll cost a fair amount more, but it will also double as a portable space heater/miniature Circ De Sola LED light show….

Well, I've never played oblivion but for Unreal, you should have enough juice to run it well with your listed specs. While the 2.6 does offer better performance, really its negligable between the 2.2 and 2.4. I say save your funds on that processor but if money is no object for you, go for it.

It's good you got the 7200 RPM hd because that, along with the extra RAM will make the biggest difference. I just wish I could get a 10,000rpm drive for a laptop but don't we all.

Waiting on the alienware isn't an option for me but it seems like a sweet rig. The videocard will top that of the M1530 for sure if they do put the 8800M GTX in it. I'm a sucker for pretty colored lights too and the 15x sure has all that.

BTW, since Dell now owns alienware...perhaps they're trying to push the alienware more for gaming as opposed to the newer XPS laptops. Maybe if they focus on one more than the other, you won't get 2 mediocre lines.
