Ordering a Vostro 1200 and it ships with the basic Vista. Is the Aero stuff or the business version worth the extra? Never tried Vista.

What will you use it for?
The Vista Business has apart from the Aero which is just a visual gimmick, quite a few business features, but if you don't need don't pay for it.
As for the Aero interface, it has the semi-transparent windows and the window spinning. -

I'm not too sure, but its not just the aero that makes a difference between basic and premium

I think Vista basic doesn't come with Aero, correct me if I'm wrong.
-
I can order the vista with the aero - is it worth an extra $40? I may just load my old XP anyway so I may not spend extra on the Vista.

It really depends which features you want! Look at the feature comparison chart and see if you want things like Aero and Media Centre (In premium) or the business components in Business.
I have Ultimate on my desktop but it's not really worth it, Home Premium on my laptop does everything I want from it. Not a fan of Vista Business personally, most of the extra apps are fairly pointless and no Media Centre (have a remote for my PC so it's useful). -
Basic does not ship with Aero and the media centre programs, lots of hardcore gamers actually like Basic since it means less processes and services in the background eating system resources which should be going into the game's performance.
-
Absolutely not worth it - just for Areo.
But it is worth it if you want all the extra software that SHOULD come with the upgrade from say basic to home premium. A lot more fine tunning and tweaking abilities the higher the Vista version you got bluntly. But if you're a haxor, then Vista basic is perfect for example. -
Thanks.
Sorry for my ignorance but whats a "haxor"? -
lol - I should have typed it normally. I meant 'hacker'.
I'm speaking of enthusiasts that dive-in and get there hands dirty so to speak.
They don't let stupid limitations stop them from hacking and tweaking things to get more function or potential out of them. -
Aero definitely looks good but it's not really a WOW thing that you would absolutely want in your system.

As a gamer, I prefer Vista Basic.
