    1) Is the body of Vostro 1400 like the Inspiron 1420 except that the 1400 is all black and has a magnesium alloy coating?

    2) Also is the Vostro 1500 like the Inspiron 1520 except that the 1500 is all black and has a magnesium alloy coating?

    Yeap, both assumptions are correct.

They sure do look the same to me, but the Vostro is ALL black which is kinda cool. I guess/hope the true difference lies INSIDE! If there even is a difference other than pricing...

Is it just a magnesium alloy coating or that the entire body is made out of magnesium allow composite ?

Also just one more question? Is the body of the Vostro shiny or matte?

My 1420 feels solid all around. The keyboard and palm rest area is all plastic, but the underneath of the notebook is definitely something more solid than the rest of the plastic. I still don't believe that the Vostros are all magnesium-alloy and that the Inspirons are not manufactured with the same materials. Could the casing of the Inspiron/Vostros be some sort of magnesium-alloy composite material, perhaps mixed with a plastic or covered in plastic?

Oh ok as the Vostro 1000 has a shiny body on the inside (palm rests and inside scrren) and a matte body on the outside (the bottom and the lid)

Hopefully the Vostro 1500 and 1400 are like the Vostro 1000
