I realize that not many people still own one of these, but in general, if I have an Inspiron, how painful is the process of replacing a damaged LCD screen?

    Probably not that bad?

In terms of how many screws you have to replace, it's definitely not as bad as something like a D820/D830. With regard to how easy it is to break that flimsy bezel, maybe a little worse. If you replace the screen without taking off the display assembly, that'll make turning screws that much harder, but then you won't have to re-thread all the silly cables, etc.

tl;dr not any harder than any other Dell laptop of the same age.
