Is it? Then mine doesnt? Are there any power options that need to be modified? I just got my first notebook (6400) less than a week ago. Should i complain to CuCa?
-
If you are connected via AC adapter no. If you are connected by battery yes.
-
yes, its a great feature, why would you want to waste power and backlight life by having it remain on when you put the lid down?
Comp, its supposed to on AC as well. Again, zero point in having it on when the lid is down. -
i stand corrected jeffmd is correct
-
then i have problems. the screen does not automatically turn off when i close the lid.. i just tested it 5 -6 times, connected and disconnected the ac power and no result at all. any suggestion what should be done?
-
restart your notebook and try again. Are you still under warranty?
-
Restarted, tried closing the lid with each with AC power on and off. it doesnt help.
my power options are set as below:
Turn Off Monitor: Never (for both on AC power and on batteries)
System Standby: Never (for both)
But this shouldn't be the case isnt it? The above mentioned power options apply when one is working with the lid open.
The screen should just turn off when the lid is closed isn't it? Any (non-dell?) driver related problems? -
go to display properties. Then click screen saver-->power-->advance-->then you will see options
-
Yes, the driver is the problem (barring a defect with your hardware). After extensive research I found that the only drivers that support this feature (whether on AC power or battery) are the stock Dell drivers. The laptopvideo2go, tweaksrus, etc. drivers are modified desktop drivers, so they do not have the lid behavior built into the drivers. If you reinstall the stock Dell drivers from the support site the lid should turn off when closed if you select the "do nothing" option.

Okay, the display adaptor, i.e ATI Radeon 1400 has the latest Dell dirivers (i formatted the notebook and downloaded it from Dell Support 8.261)
The four default monitor options that i see have their driver provider as Microsoft. Now, should i:
1. Revert back to the drivers i got preloaded using the Dell Resource CD
2. Check for new drivers (the Ati or the monitor? which one?) on Dell support?
i got the notebook less than a week ago, so no problems with that. -
sorry that is all I know. Chat with dell online and tell them maybe they will give you a new screen
-
No, the screen is not your problem. I've never used an ATI card before on a notebook, so I couldn't tell you for sure about what drivers to use, but I would try reverting back to the drivers it had when you got it, or check for newer ones. In my experience with nvidia cards, it has always been the drivers causing these problems.
-
all i can tell you is that i'm on the stock drivers from dell and my screen goes off when i close my lid, so if you've changed those then that is most likely your problem.
-
Interesting... I have been seeking a solution to this issue for some time. It's a shame I have to sacrifice features from other drivers in order to get the screen off. However, nVidia now has drivers up specifically for the e1705, I wonder if it includes such features? I'll try when I get home.

If you have ATI video card, you need to enable ATI HotKey Poller in services.msc . Set this for automatic and reboot. It should caused your screen to turn off when you close the lid.
-
If you go to Control Panel, click on Performance and Maintenance, and then go into Power Options and click on the Advanced tab, you should have the ability to tell your computer what to do when you close the screen - i.e. turn off the screen, go into standby, etc.
-
Googled the issue and the answer turned out to be the same as SoutherGirl's. It is supposed to turn off after closing the lid. Worked. Thanks a lot everyone
But what about leaving the lid closed while downloading at night? As leaving it open would lead to dust accumulating on the Keyboard and the screen. would the Air vent which is just along side the either ends of the keyboard in any way have some effect on the screen? or is it just wise to keep the lid open while the notebook is running? -
As long as you don't have your laptop set to go into standby/hibernation or any of the power options set (i.e. turn off HDD after 15 minutes, etc), the laptop should stay on with the lid closed.
Personally, i would just keep the lid closed if you are not using the laptop. -
So will the air vents effect the LCD when the lid's closed?
-
No, it shouldn't make a difference. The temperature won't get too high simply by downloading anyhow.
Good to hear that you got your problem figured out. -
I am having a problem with that too. I have it set to standby when the lid is closed, but it does nothing. The monitor stays on. It doesn't seem to recognise the lid is closed. Any suggestions?
-
I had that problem and wasn't driver related. Dell replaced my sexy LG display with an ugly samsung
I also had problems with the monitor not turning on when the lid was opened, so maybe my situation was different. -
I figured it out, my lid sensor isn't working. Guess I have to figure out how to change it.
-
Yep, that was it, the connector came loose. Got it working perfectly now. YAY!
Is the screen supposed to turn off when you close the lid?
