I recently purchased Dell E1505 and didn't choose Vista upgrade at the time of purchase. I am in a dilemma about whether to go for vista or not. Dell has a deadline for a free vista upgrade of March 31 2007. Is there a deadline to install Vista in the system after I receive the CD/DVD? Can I wait for the supporting software to evolve and install after a year? (Till that time I would like to keep XP) The only reason I am tempted to go is the free upgrade from Dell so that I can save about $100 in the future. Any comments are welcome. Thanks.

If you didn't choose the Vista upgrade option when you purchased you may be in for a fight to even get it. The 3/31/07 deadline is the deadline for applying for the upgrade DVD provided that you selected the Vista Upgrade option when buying your notebook.
Good luck, but Dell made the default Vista Upgrade option "NO" for a reason...to give MS (and/or Dell) the chance to make more money. -
It sounds like you might have a problem. If you did not choose the upgrade you might be able to talk them into it if you get the right person on the phone. But chances are slim. How long ago did you buy it? I am concerned about the same thing. Is there a deadline to have it installed by? The order date is drop dead. The installation is what is in question here.

Installation deadline?
Well Microsoft is ending support for XP in 2014, so anytime after that would be the deadline I suppose. -
That is what I was wondering if we can wait until more bugs are out of Vista to install. I am not installing mine until it is more stable.

I just ordered my vista upgrade CD and I was charged only for the shipping though I didn't choose this options when I bought the system. I would probably wait as long as possible (for atleast 6 months) before I install vista in my system.

I waited a year with XP and just immediately updated with all new updates it ran pretty well. So I will wait for atleast 6 months for my install. I do not like being MS's guinea pig. Did that once or twice and learned wonderful lessons.
Virus protection new hardware installations hard drive low level format things like that.
I really hope and think Vista is better than those experiences though.

Iceman0124 More news from nowhere
I dont think checking the box is required, when I went through my outlet vista upgrade ordeal, I was told that the box on the order page was just to gain an assesment of how many they would need, thats why you have to register after the fact to get the upgrade.
As for when you decide to install the upgrade, I wouldnt think there would be any expiration, and if there is it should be clesrly marked. I dont intend to install mine for quite some time.
Is there a deadline to install Vista?
