my fan has been going off erratically. Sometimes I'm not even doing anything and it'll turn on. I'd like to hav ea program that will recognize and monitor the fan speed over a period of time, not necessarily regulate the speed, just monitor the RPM.

You can try I8Kfangui. It wasn't written for the Studio series, but it works on my Studio 1537. The only issue is when I set it to monitor the fan speed in RPM's, my whole computer will freeze every couple of seconds for a few seconds. But it works if I just set it to monitor the fan speed as "Off, Slow, High" and I can control the fan with those three speeds. I recommend that you uncheck the "Run at start up" option, in case the program freezes your machine.
