I've been thinking about this sparkle issue (or is this really sparkles, what I am refering to is where it appears to be dust all over the screen, cant see how that would be sparkles?).
Anyway, I am thinking, is it just that Dell choose cheap LCD panels and hope noone will notice the problem that white is not white etc. or is there perhaps a reason for this? The white on the XPSM170 is the worst I have seen on a laptop, but on the other hand, the blackness level is the best I have ever seen. Could it be that this problem is infact a tradeoff, that pure whites have been sacrificed to achive pure black(s)? Considering that this laptop is aimed at gamers etc, it is not entirely unlikely....or is it? Has anyone compared this to something like the latest and greatest Sony laptops, that are known to have very good screens? What was the outcome? Better or worse?

what screen do you have, LG or Samsung?

...anyways, back to your topic, i think sonys have the best screen (but it seems they always do, even with tube and plasmas tvs) -
The sparkles are caused by an improperly applied anti-glare coating that looks like metallic dust. Every Sony screen I've seen (and I've seen a lot) doesn't exhibit this issue at all. Nor do any 17" Fujitsu, Toshiba or HP screens.

LG's have a dusty, dirty, metallic looking anti glare coating (the soo called sparkles) while the anti glare coating on the samsung panels is more of a transparent, patterned sheen and much less noticeable.
The samsung panels are brigther and therefore have more light leakage but this is common on all lcd panels and does dissipate over time. My samsung had severe light leakage that dissipated over the course of about four weeks. Panels that dont have alot of light leakage are noticeably darker to begin with. I hope this helps you out with your dilemma.
Fujitsu screens as metioned by the poster above, use an entirely different coating method from ANY other manufacturer and are the best displays out there for laptops but they are also ALOT brighter, 300 or mor nits of brigthness compared to the 180 to 200 most panels out there are using. As a result these beautiful screens also eat batteries for breakfast but if you can afford a fujitsu laptop, they do have lovely displays although they are a bit noisy and run very hot. -
I have a Samsung screen on my M170 and it only has a minimal amount of light leakage.
Is there a reason for sparkles other than poor quality
