I bought a Inspirion 1501, got a great deal for it as I only paid $449 for it. It's been shipped and on it's way. I like the Vostro's, so if I called Dell today and asked them if I can buy a Vostro instead would I get charged if they let me refuse the package?

If so, no biggie as paying under $450 for a new laptop isn't so bad but if I can return it without paying a fee to buy something else I would buy a Vostro 1500 in a heartbeat.

They do charge for cancellation after it's been shipped, I guess your case would be treated as such.

I believe that if you refuse delivery they would not charge... but that's based on what I know about dell and that ain't saying much.

I recently made the same mistake that you're about to make. Immediately returned a super deal of a notebook that I was lucky to get at $479, only to spend well over 2x that for one that is NOT 2x as good, and this has only resulted in headaches, delays, and charge disputes... and I still don't have it!

Don't let the initial spike of buyers remorse get you- because there will always be something more tempting right around the corner. Keeping the one you already have coming is less hassle, less money, less waiting, a great deal, and is enough computer for you- or at least you thought so when you ordered it. What's changed since then?

You can get out of the restocking fee, but seriously man, keep the inspiron.

Wow I appreciate the honesty and that's what i'm kicking myself with. Is the Vostro 1500 with a T5450 that much better than a Mobile TK-53? It probably is and I get a couple more upgrades to boot for an additional $150 bucks. I'm just wondering what kind of a hassle it will be waiting for Dell to process my return and get my money back etc while buying another laptop.

I'm also wondering what the Vostro will actually look like in person not just a picture and will I regret making THAT purchase if I don't like it?

I bought the 1501 as a way to play RTS games like Age of Empires 3 and Civ 4 on it.

    Thanks for your input. :)

Well I called Dell and they were very nice as usual. I spoke to a rep(non US) and he told to accept the package and that he would call tomorrow to have DHL pickup the laptop at no extra charge and no restocking fee.

So I placed an order for a Vostro 1500, stripped it of all the bloatware for $599. For the extraa $100 dollars I get a C2D 5470 CPU, 120GB HD, a discreet nVidia 128mb graphics card and a dual layer DVD writer.

Yeah knew you could get out of the restocking fee, just starting over now.

And $150 more isn't bad at all, to get exactly what you wanted. And glad you are dealing with Dell- maybe they will actually put the credit back on your card.

    Congrats.

Did it happen to you? Do you know this to be true or are you guessing?

he told you to accept it? it be leary of that. once you accept it, your toast :)

he could be telling the truth, and probably is. but best bet is to deny the package, tell them its a return. Itll go back same day, and no one has your sig!

Thanks man. Yeah $150 more for all that plus the new laptop case is not too shabby at all.

Thanks for the heads up. :) I was assigned and did receive a case# via email as promised. Zeeshan the Dell CSR told me it would be faster to have Dell request a pickup via DHL rather than have DHL send it back as a refused package.

He said that the charges on my CC will be reversed faster if Dell issues a callback for the laptop, because it's generated from their system and they can track it and put it back into their inventory.

He also said I can escalate my concerns to his supervisor if I feel i'm being messed with. So far i'm giving Dell the benefit of doubt as they've so far followed thru on everything they said they were going to do. We shall see if this holds true. The Vostro I ordered today has a 7/31 ship date and hopefully this is accurate as they just announced them yesterday.
