ok, so ive heard that there are some advantages with certain parts. like, there is less light leakage with a certain brand of lcd. my question is, is there a way to check for that, before i get my laptop? like, can i check online or something?

Not really. After you place your order, dell picks out the parts but generally they have multiple brands for each part. Even if you call Dell, they won't be able to tell you.

gah..i dont want to wait to see if i got a "bad" laptop. just for reference, what are the better hardware options? what is the better hard drive/lcd/ram and all that good stuff? i think light leakage will be my biggest concern

light leakage is just one of those where either you have it or you don't. I know there have been some posts to suggest that it is due to a certain brand, but from my experience most LCDs have some type of light leakage. It is just a matter of how bad it is.

As for the rest of the laptop, i think they use the same ram in all types... not really sure. I think the sony drive causes the most problems in CD/DVD drive, but I can't remember 100%. I have the NEC and haven't had any problems with it.

You can call dell and ask for your service tag number. What i actually did was call customer care and asked what brand LCD i got with my XPS1710 I just ordered. She said she couldnt tell me and gave me the service tag # and the Hardware support phone #. I just went to dell.ca and entered my tag # on the page and checked, got a Samsung LCD screen.

As soon as your laptop is shipped, you Dell will give you your service tag #. Enter it in under "My Account" or Support.Dell.com & view your original configuration. All you'll be able to see are the part #'s and the manufacturers of the parts.

So you'd be able to tell what brand LCD, HDD & optical drives you have, but you'd have to wait for the laptop to arrive to see how bad the leakage is (if any).
