Upgrade to Vista Ultimate, or use something like Acronis Truimage or Norton Ghost to make a hard drive backup you can restore from.

You should have gotten Dell recovery discs, those are just like the normal Windows CDs. They aren't recovery programs, they are reinstall discs.

On a Dell, like HP, there is a dedicated hidden part of your hard drive that contains an image of your computer's hard drive contents from the factory. This can be used to quickly restore your system to it's factory state in minutes, making it great when pressed for time.

Unlike HP however, Dell also gives you full copies of Windows Vista or XP on a CD/DVD, a Drivers CD and provides the disks for any additional software you requested to be installed on your computer, like Microsoft Office, Norton Antivirus, etc.

This approach is better than HP's because it's more flexible: some choose to perform what's known as a "clean install" when they receive their computer to get rid of all the junk software A.K.A-"Bloatware" that typically comes preloaded. HP's "recovery disks" contain all of this junk from the start. You don't have to worry about this aspect, since Vostro's come from the factory "Bloatware" free.

When I did not get the recovery disks with my new Vostro 1500, I requested them by email to Dell customer support and got them within 5 days. It was free.
