Is there a way to turn off the monitor manually without putting the computer to sleep or hibernation? There are times when I download large files and just leave my computer on. I don't want to close the lid because I noticed that the keyboard gets very hot when the lid is closed and I'm afraid it might damage the monitor. The only method that I've thought of is to have my monitor shut down after a minute of idle but it gets annoying having to change the settings everytime I want to do that.

Change brightness to the lowest setting. That should turn off the backlight.

Tried it but doesn't work. I wish they had a button to manually turn off the monitor...

In Windows Vista, you can go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does....and set it so that closing the lid won't do anything.

Just go to control panel>power options>Choose when to turn off the display, set it to like 1 min. works for me.

Of you guys read what he saids, he already know about changing what closing the lid does, but he doesnt wanna close the lid because it makes the keyboard way too hot, and he also tried changing the backlight option where it will automatically shut off in 1 min but he doesnt wanna do that either because he hates changing the options..

Now back to the question, yes it is too bad that it doesnt have a monitor power button but if it is plugged in, just leave the lid on and after idling for 30 minutes or 1 hour or whatever you have it on, it will shut off but other than that, there isn't much you can do about it.. :p

In windows XP I used to use the "black screen" screensaver... which basically would turn the screen black after X minutes... I dont know if this works in Vista though

There is one script written by some member here.. search for monitor shut down script.. will let you know if I found that...
Its besically switch off the monitor when you double click the script.. and the monitor switch on again if any key press or mouse movement detected..

I use a program called monitoroff. It works fine, as I have a shortcut icon in object dock. Can;t remember where I got it from though..

go to the function key, fn, where it says something like crt/lcd, and press it twice and your monitor should be off. I do that when connecting to a plasma tv, but if you don't connect it to anything, it will just be monitor-off mode. BTW, if you press it again, it will turn the monitor on.

Yea i tried the function key method but all it does is flicker after it searches for an external monitor. Sigh I guess this issue is hopeless.

    hey everyone,
I have exactly what you are looking for!
It's just a very tiny exe, which will turn off you monitors when clicked on. No installation or anything required.
