A bunch of my classmates had bought Inspiron 15R's , and almost all of the models with GPU's (5470) had experienced overheating issues. They idle pretty hot in the first place (60~70 degrees C) and shut down after long periods of heavy usage , and simply refuse to restart ( for me this stopped after a firmware update), but the high temperature readings continue. A friend got a replacement motherboard, but the refurb motherboard was DOA, so the tech just reapplied thermal paste, and it was all good. His laptop idles at 30 something degrees C ( and his city is a lot hotter than mine)

There appear to be a lot of similar complaints on the dell forums. I wanted to know if anybody had faced the same here. I was planning to just reapply thermal paste for now, and see if it holds, or should i get a mobo replacement/are there bigger problems?

I don't think there is an overheating issue, but the cooler system is definitely not up to par cooling the Clarksfield i7s + the discreet graphics offered. It's like 1 heatpipe to cool everything (not a good idea, my Vostro 1500 has 1 massive heatpipe for CPU and another for the GPU).

    Hi

I think there is a design problem as the fan is running very fast and loud. Temp of the cpu is in between 55 and 65 very quickly. Had regular locks up (once a day or 2 average) but not due to high temp might have to reinstall system.

I have found the stock thermal paste used on most computers is crap.

A fresh application of some decent stuff like AS5 etc will very likely = an noticeable decrease in temps on both the CPU and GPU

My N5010 i7 idles around 55 to 60 ... but when gaming ... in Summer its going up to a maximum of 106 Deg Cel when playing BF BC 2 ... in Winter ... it stays a max of around 88 Deg Cel. It is normal for this model to overheat I guess. .. PS. my card is HD5650 not HD5470
