Is there any reason NOT to use the slim 65watt adapter with the XPS M1330?

The standard adapter is 85 watts, is it ok to use the 65 watts? If it only charges a little slower that doesn't matter to me.

If it is anything like my current i5160, and I'm sure it is, it won't charge with a lower rated adaptor... It will just power the laptop...

As a general rule of thumb: no, it is not OK. If you use an adapter close or above to it's specification it will heat up considerable and may not be as stable as it should be.

He's asking about using the slimline, lower wattage adapter.

And to answer the question, yes it should work and charge the laptop (albeit slower), there's a slight possibility that it will only power the laptop and not charge the battery though.

Yeah, it's the adaptor offered on the order page with the laptop. I should hope that it wouldn't be a fire hazard!

It's smaller and lighter and easier to carry around.

I believe it will still power up the system, but im not sure if ever it will charge the battery and I believe if ever this system is designed to work at 85watts then I believe a lower wattage will be a problem. I believe you will recieve an error message on the system like ac adapter not determined or something like that.

My adapter that came with the system is a 65 watt adapter. (The regular plug) So that isn't different from the slim line adapter.

The adapter that came with my m1330 is 65W as well. Personally I would have preferred something larger.

Ic so this system will work with a 65W ac adapter so I believe you wont have any problem w/ this because you said that you will be ok w/ it if ever the difference is just the charging time of the battery. Correct me if Im wrong...

All my power bricks (90W) for my 8200 get hot like that. I even melted a tiny section of my sleeping bag with it when it got left on there by accident once.

dell is known to give 65 watt adapters with smaller laptops with no dedicated gpu, but higher watt psu's with laptops with a dedicated graphics card. If you use a smaller than advertised psu, NO the laptop wont get hurt. Dell wont allow its laptop to use a psu it cant handle or damage it. A smaller psu with a dedicated gpu will only power the system and not charge the battery at all. So yes you can use it with no problem, however, it wont charge your battery, but it wont hurt your lappy.

I think the 65W does charge the battery (even with the GPU fitted). [Same for the 65W adaptor for my D610].

The higher wattage adaptor may charge the battery faster.
It will also give more leeway if you start drawing more power from the system. e.g. potentially a user could plug in a USB hub, several USB powered hard disks, turn on the wireless and Bluetooth, have the fan, disk, DVD drive going at top speed, set the screen at maximum brightness, all with 4GB of RAM installed.
I am not sure if the 65W would still be able to charge the battery under those circumstances.

So what you're saying is that I have a magic laptop??? Mine has the dedicated gpu, 65 watt charger and it has no problem fully charging the battery while I use the laptop.

Mine has a dedicated GPU and such. But it does take a while to charge (around 4 or 5 hours.)
