Along with other people I have a constant hiss/noise whenever I plug in my headphones, even when not playing music or any audio. I'd like to know whether it is a specific problem of which only my Studio suffers or if this is a problem which occurs to every Studio.

To be clear: I'm not talking about the infamous crackling audio problem.

    Please reply!

Never used my headphone jack until now, but I get a VERY light hiss (have to really listen for it and have nothing playing to notice it) when using either earphone jack.

A lot better than my ol' 1520, not that I ever use the headphone ports.

I do not with any of my current or older laptops (Aspire One, Acer 5100, Acer 5050, Gateway M series FX, HP dv5000).

Sometimes when I have my external speakers cranked up and nothing is playing I'll hear something but I expect that to be normal.

Old 600m has the hiss. I purchased a PCMCIA audio card so I don't have to live with it. The hiss is louder than my music at points.

my studio 15 gives a lot of headphone hiss when something is actually making sound, ie a movie playing, but is silent when nothing is making any sound.

The hiss is quite annoying, is there a solution to this?

i dont generally use headphones but i run an RCA cable out of my headphone jack into my stereo receiver.. havent heard any hiss or crackles yet... hope i dont.

i wasnt worried about the lack of quality in the studio speakers since i always listen from real speakers, but this would annoy me to no end.

A little hiss out of one pair of headphones that I own, but it does not interfere with movies / music. Another pair of phones I own have a better S/N ration and no hiss at all.

Sometimes its the source, sometimes its the speakers.

Ive tested this with a headphone set that gives no hiss from other sources. I also get a small pop/squeak when going from mute to unmute, anyone else get this?

You mean a short beep? You probably have the same problem as me: 30 seconds with no sound --> Hiss goes away --> sound, accompanied by a beep. I disabled the energy management option in the settings of the IDT software. Now, the hiss is always there, but the beep has gone.

It depends on the headphones I use (Inspiron 1520). With my Sennheiser PX100's, I don't get any; with the Dell earbuds it shipped with it was rather bad; with the old Altec Lansing headphones I had it was there but pretty mild.

So I think it does have something to do with the headphones themselves. The higher quality headphones I use, the less of an issue this is. Of course, that doesn't mean higher quality ones across the board won't have a problem - it simply holds across the very small sample size I've tested.

@kk2008, yes this is what my 1537 does.

@bigdarkmad, this does not fix the issue for me, and also makes the min volume not silent.

Ive contacted dell tec, and they advised a bios flash to A5 and the latest audio drivers. this did not fix the issue.

Im waiting to hear back from them on what to do next.

dell tec also suggested this (which did not work for me) but it may be useful to someone:

I would also suggest you to disable the band option as it might be resulting in the poor functioning of the speakers, please follow the below mentioned steps for the same :

    1. Go to: Start ?> Control Panel ?> Device Manager.
    2. Click the plus (+) sign next to ?Network Adapters?.
    3. Right-click on your wireless adapter and select ?Properties?.
    4. Go to the ?Advanced? tab.
    5. Select ?Disable Bands?.
    6. Pull down ?Disable 802.11a?.
    7. Click ?Apply

im waiting again to hear what to do next.

People with Dell Wireless 1397 don't have this option!
So they can't disable 802.11a!!! (including me)!

Structure: Ask Dell about some "Special" BIOS
    My replaced motherboard was:
    1. Original had A2 - everythingFine - "No crackling sound"
    2. Upgraded to A5 - Crackling
    3. Downgraded to A2 (dell's web) - UNABLE TO ID THE BATTERY + crackling
    4. Updated to A3 - ONLY Crackling
    5. Updated to A6 - Crackling

My Dell Support Guy asked them about some "special" BIOS, but because my country is very small and unpopular...
    So The result was negative...
Now I'm with Vista SP2 X64; standard Vista AUDIO Driver; no Wireless/Bluetooth drivers. The sound is well in 90 % of the time!
BUT I'm 100 % THE PROBLEM IS BIOS RELATED AND DELL HAS GOOD VERSION BUT....

yes i dont have that option, you can set the wireless mode to jut be b/g which i guess would have the same effect.

Its really no good at the moment ive tried every permutation of drivers, but i still get the silance->unmute sweak->playsound with hiss in background-> silence issue. This is so bad on the headphone only port, that short windows sounds are half over before its even unmuted.

I think this is a driver issue, posibly a quick fix for the hissing could of been to put the mute in, if the audio chanel was clean in the first place why would you need it.

Dell tec is calling me tomorrow.

I had promise from Dell for "New Audio Driver" too.
But their website is still with old drivers...nothing new...

Spent some time with dell tec on the phone a tried a number of things, including changing audio drivers and changing wireless channels and such, but this did not fix the issue.

I had del tec come out today and replace the motherboard and speakers (though this is a headphone issue) and the screen, i had some stuck pixels.

This unfortunately did not change the issue, so i can only conclude that it is a driver issue or bad hardware that cannot be fixed.

This is a shame because it taints an otherwise good laptop.

I guess i will have to wait for a driver update to the one that is available now.

I don't have this hiss sound, neither the crackling sound, since I disabled the A band in my wireless LAN card.(Studio 1535)

    Oh Thank you.
I had my motherboard and Dell Wireless card replaced but the issue still persist.
I had some doubtful about the speakers...
But after your post now I'm sure my hardware is FINE!
    I'm waiting for new drivers....
