Is there anything important that can be permanently lost by reformatting?

I'm just doing a fresh install of Vista.

I'm not sure if I have done the AHCI properly. I tried to do it when I was partitioning and I loaded the one of about 10 AHCI things that it said was compatible with my hardware.

I can always install it later right?

Just use the guide provided on this forum and you'll be fine. :)

I don't want media direct though so I have to do it a bit differently unfortunately.

Seems to be going OK. I don't see why I shouldn't be able to get all the drivers

If you don't want Media Direct I'm guessing you could just follow the steps, except boot with the Vista CD instead... and it'll still ask to load any drivers, which is when you select the AHCI driver.

    I've just finished.

It doesnt really ask you for drivers.

There is one point where you are partioning where you can ambiguously 'load drivers' but it doesn't say whether thats just to help partition or what.

I put the ACHI in there and it didnt seem to do anything so I didnt botehr with anymore
