Hey, I was going to buy a new DELL laptop, however since I was thinking on whether to buy one when Vista came out, I didnt buy one.

However now my mind is made up that I DO want a laptop. I live in Hong Kong and here the XPS is NOT available yet. I'm an avid gamer and I was planning to go in for a customized 9400 Inspiron. However, I see that Dell has replaced the cards from an Nvidia 7800 GTX to a ATI x1400 non dedicated.

I have checked some info on the x1400 and it is nowhere as close to the 7800 in terms of performance. Do you guys know any new models that might be on the way soon that offer a better video card? What exactly do I do?

    thx a lot.

the x1400 is fine for most
it is dedicated, too (128mb ded. 128 from ram)
you should get the x1600, it's a great card (although a rumoured x1700 might be out soon)

Hi, thanks for your quick reply.

I have NO option to choose any other graphics card. When I clikc on customize it only gives me one option and thats the x1400. I would like the x1600 but I dont have that option at all, even if I'm willing to pay extra.

I think your'e using the card that I'm thinking about. How is it? Can it run the newest games such as Oblivion in high settings?

Should I just wait for the Inspiron 9500? (if and when it comes)

Agreed. The x1400 is fine for most, but is still considered an lower-level card for gaming. The x1600 is great, but every laptop I have used with one runs hotter than blazes (mainly the Acer 8204 and MBP). The nVidia cards don't seem to have the inherent heat problems that some of the ATI cards have...If you are a gamer, you may want to wait a few months until more options are available.

haha again thx for the super quick reply, seems we are all online at once!

I was wondering, because next year I will probably be going to the US for university. If I ordered an XPS and shipped it to Hong Kong, would I have warrantly problems using it here? and would I have problems when in another year and halfs time whe i went to the US?

You need a Dell international warranty, which is included if you purchase a 3 year Dell service plan. Then, you can get warranty service in H.K. as well as the U.S.
