I've just taken delivery of a new Inspiron 9300 with the WUXGA screen 1900X1200.
I notice that different areas of the screen are different shades. This is particularly noticeable when colours are dark.
It looks particularly bad when booting, the screen looks like its crumpled. Theres one particlarly bad area left of centre.
I took some photos which you can view HERE
It looks like the LCD is not stretched tight behind the glass.

Are they all like this or did I get a lemon ??

Wow, that's bad. That's most definitely a lemon.

that's called light leakage and is most common in 17" screens because its such a large screen. that being said, it does look bad but (1) how does it look when you're viewing it straight ahead, those pictures are angled quite severely and (2) sometimes it evens out over the course of a couple days.

can you post some straight-ahead pics?

Viewed straight on the distortion is far less noticeable although it is still there. As such it is very hard to capture on the camera. Looking at a blank windows destop you can see vertical bands or waves of a darker shade of blue which is noticeable. When watching a widescreen DVD the dark bars top and bottom have noticeable shading which is annoying.
I had a look at a few laptops in my local PC World today (17 inch Toshiba, Sony,17 inch Philips, etc.) I rebooted them and had a good look at the screens as they started and they were all perfect

Send that back a.s.a.p. Tell them you want a new laptop/new LCD. They will probably suggest comming to your home, or you sending the lappy to them (depending on your warranty plan) and replacing the LCD. From what I have heard though, these Dell techs do more damage than good when replacing such components.

If I were in your position, personally, unless there something extraordinary about the laptop (I guess with the Dell the price when using coupons) I would send the thing back and try a different model/make entirely. My opinion though.

At the least I would send it back, full refund, and repurchase at a later date.

Do you have the complete care service? If so they should come right out to where you are and replace the screen. At least they have on my other Dells.

Got my i9300 a couple days ago. I have a friend who got his a couple weeks ago. We both have light washing through at the bottom of the screen when it is displaying black. He thought it was defective, so he called Dell to get a new one. His new laptop has the same thing. I believe this is an inherent problem with LCDs, but it seems worse on the i9300s screen. It doesn't bother me too much and I can't see it most of the time.
