I take it the GPU is the 8600 right? Well, overall yea i would say thats a pretty nice deal, especially if you like hdd space. But you should get the lowest ram you can and ugrade yourself to save even more money.

I'd spend that kind of money on an XPS, like the M1730, not on an Inspiron.

Do you need 4 GB from Dell? Do you need Vista Ultimate? Those cost good money and you can do better elsewhere with the RAM.

For that money, I would definitely look at the XPS line instead. What they mean about the ram is that it is much cheaper to buy as little ram as possible from Dell and then install your own ram, which will cost usually half as much or less. It is very easy to install ram on dell laptops. Usually just taking out 2 screws from the bottom of the laptop, stick in the new ram, and screw the cover back on. I think the performance difference between 3GB and 4GB of ram on Vista is not very significant. You might as well stick with 3GB anyway since you won't be able to use the full 4GB of ram without 64bit anyway.

And if you call up Dell Sales, you may find a rep who is willing to downgrade your RAM. Usually the price difference between 1gb and 3gb is about 200-250 dollars from Dell. You can get crucial 2gb SODIMM for about 18 bucks after rebate these days.

Secondly, I am not sure how much Dell charges for ultimate, but you can get OEM Vista Ultimate for about 120-130 bucks online.
