I just bought a Dell Vostro 1700 and everything runs fine except every time I leave the computer for a while and it goes into sleep mode it is impossible to get the screen back. Normally you move the mouse or press a key and it comes back but I have to press the Shutdown button every time to restart it. What can I do?

I believe this is a weird issue a very minority of Vostro owners have had. Have you tried phoning Dell tech support? They are helpful when it comes to odd problems like this.

Ive heard that this is a vista issue, so it may not be limited to the vostros, vista has had some trouble coming back out of sleep/hibernation mode sometimes. Dont know much more than that but look into vista and sleep problems, theres probably an update to fix it.

Try this: Make it so it doesn't go to sleep when closing the lid. People say this is possibly a fix for these problems.

Hmm, but he's simply letting his laptop go idle without closing the lid. And also, wouldn't it create an unwanted event where you actually want the notebook to go to sleep when you close the lid but it won't?

    I suppose it's personal preference, but I don't think that's a viable solution.

This is just a workaround. I think Microsoft has yet to create a fix for this

Another workaround you may try is to go to the device manager, system devices, right click the ACPI Lid, update driver, click browse my computer, click to pick from the list, uncheck compatible devices and select volume manager. Then restart.

So then this is problem on all vista laptops? so I shouldn't call dell for a return (I really don't want to do that since I already have so much loaded onto my pc)

It is a Vista issue and it is on the top of the list to be fixed in SP1. Nevertheless, this can be sometimes fixed by a video driver update.

From what I've heard its a video driver issue with them not working with vista properly, but then the same happens in Kubuntu for me too. Dell's drivers work good, as do the bioshock drivers for me in Vista.
