I got it from Dell today a few days after my first order from Dell(a laptop)

    _______________
    From: "US_ATG_Online_Orders" <[email protected]>

    Dear Customer,

Thank you for your order. It has been processed, but is currently on
    Hold status.

We have not been able to get authorization on your credit card. Your
order will remain open for 3 business days (from your order date) before
it will automatically purge from our system.

Please contact your bank to resolve the issue and then contact us at
1800-999-3355 option 1, extension 7268528 as soon as possible. We can
then attempt re-authorization or we can switch your payment to a different
    card.

If your card is a debit card, it most likely has a maximum daily limit
for point of sale (POS) purchases (not the same as your ATM cash
limit). We’ll need to know what that amount is if you wish to split the
payments over more than one day. I can split the payments over a maximum
of three days, however, so it must be within that limit. Most banks
will give a one-time authorization as a service to their customers if you
    just ask.

If we do not receive any notice from you within 3 business days, our
system will automatically cancel your order.

Thank you for being a Dell customer.

find a direct number to dell on their website and call that instead.

or, email that message to customer support and ask if its real.

Yes, it's legit. It doesn't ask you to respond with your credit card number or anything.

It looks legit, but to be sure I would call Dell directly (not from the number provided in the email) and ask.

but that doesn't mean they won't ask for it. Can't hurt to call a more direct number.

I had the same email last yearon one of my orders. Basically your billing address is wrong or your debit card has a max limit (most do have a limit anywhere from 300 to 700). Charge it and pay it off with a check it will actually boost your credit score anyway.

This is legit, but you still need to contact Dell. You can contact order support and get the mess straighten out. If your billing information is correct, call your credit card company or the bank that holds your debit card and explain the situation. The banks are use to this and will know what to do. It is a lot easier if you do this before you contact Dell because Dell will ask you to contact them and then you have to call Dell back to make sure that the purchase went through.

Another problem might be that your shipping address isn't on the your card's account. This is only a problem for people who aren't shipping to their card's main account address.

That means nothing. They could get him to call and con him out of it

That would have to be a pretty sophisticated phishing scam to actually know that you had just purchased a Dell laptop and mail you right afterward.

Unless you get messages like these all the time, or something.
