Ok. I originally had an Inspiron e1705: (100 GB hard drive, 7900go gs nvidea graphics card 256mb, 2.0 processor, 1 GB memory, 1920*1200 display). It broke down for like the 5th time so dell sent me a system replacement: XPS M1730 (500gb hard drive, 8700 dual sli nvidea graphics card, 2.5 GHz processor, 4gb memory, 1920*1200 display).

I was unhappy with this because I carry my laptop around and this laptop wouldn’t even fit in my bag. It has a very unprofessional look and I take my laptop to meetings and lectures, a lot of times in rooms where the lights will be out. This laptop has bright lights on the back that would shine bright in these environments. So after MUCH arguing they said they would send me another system replacement. This time they sent a studio xps16: (320 GB hard drive, 3670 ati video card, 2.0 processor, 4 GB memory, BUT the display is 1366*720.

I was trying to tell dell that this laptop does not meet or exceed the configuration of my last laptop due to the resolution being much less. They will not budge on this and they are telling me I have to choose between the two. I just want to get a general idea if people feel Dell has done enough in this situation and I am being unreasonable or if Dell should do a little more. All I want is a 16inch display with 1920*1080 and I would be more than happy.
I didn’t originally order a gaming laptop for a reason. The looks and size being the reason but dell doesn’t believe this plays a part when issuing a system replacement.

Take the XPS M1730, sell it on ebay or craigslist and buy yourself a brand new laptop with the specs you want. That's what I did - I tried to use the
M1730 but the thing was just too big and bulky for me. I sold it and bought an XPS Studio 13 and love it....got a 3 year warranty and a $99 mini and still have several hundred dollars left to play with :)

How much did you end up selling it for. And where did you sell it? On Ebay?

You can return the 1730 to Dell. Sounds like you want the 1640, and fight for that Screen Res. that you want.

Or, you could also ask for a price adjustment..something along those lines.

Hey Cin, thanks for the response. I really dont know what a price adjustment is. Can you clarify.

Ps- its looking like dell may be willing to upgrade my screen to the rgb 1980*1080 display. This is not set in stone though

I sold mine on Craigslist for $1500 and I probably could have gotten more but I wanted it gone quickly. Then I bought the XPS Studio 13 and a mini 10v for $1200 (all inclusive of tax, delivery, upgraded 3 year warranty).

Like others mentioned, you can fight for it with Dell....but it takes a long time and is exhausting and frustrating....it was easier for me (after 40+ hours of BS with Dell) to just accept what they gave me and sell it to buy what I really wanted.

    Update:

A dell tech just left my home and installed a higher resolution screen on the studio xps16. I now have the RGB 16inch HD 1920*1080 screen. The only thing is they installed the Merlot RED back of laptop instead of BLACK which was my original color. After everything ive been through I will mention this change in color to Dell but I will not put up a huge fight if they do not simple offer to send a black one. Glad I know have a more comparable resolution to my original laptop.
