I have put a post on and have only 13 lurkers reading it. It's a true horror story about Dell and it's refurbished trade. The only responses I read is from the moderator saying the best parts 'should' be ordered from Dell sounds like *SPAM* to me! It seems to me Dell Supports this forum and has *bought* it and it's moderators as just about all the posts read are pro Dell! Tell me I am wrong I am 57 years old soon to be 58.[V]

This my 4th computer since February of 1997 I like to stay modern, I am a homebound cripple and want to get my $2100+ out of this quagmire of Dell is so D..n good, the first 800MHz system was given to my sister and her husband because both had lost their jobs in year 2000. It seems even Dell has most of it's components made 'outside' of the USA causing more and more people to lose their jobs permanently. Companies like Dell will keep bilking the public and If Dell doesn't send me the correct manual and instructions how to use a DVD RW, this will absolutely be the last Dell for me and my 2 sisters, for they are having problems with Dell also!

3 customers less as my choice and theirs is that we should have bought IBM systems known for their solid build systems and less BS..t from their supposedly Technical support representatives. Our new notebooks will be from IBM and no more nonsenical wait times for people that can hardly speak english or know what they are doing![V]

Oh, I think if you look around you can find some anti-Dell posts. We're certainly not sponsored or supported by Dell. Heck, they don't even advertise directly with us. We're definitely vendor neutral and want to hear everyone's opinion whether it's a glowing review or a diatribe on Dell being the worst company ever.

Sorry for the issues you're having. I have an IBM ThinkPad and love it to death and the experience I've had with IBM support has been very good. Maybe give them a whirl as you mentioned!

Um, yeah. If you look at my posts you'll see that 90% of the time where Dell is involved I come out against them. The only notebok they make that I like right now is the 700m, and that's only when it's on sale.

Hi chazzy, I don't think anyone around here is bought by Dell or anyone else. If you were to look back in my posts you might think I were bought by IBM, but I think they are just that good! If you were to search the forums here with the keyword bootleg2go(my login) and Dell you would find that 99% of them are not pro Dell in anyway. In fact the best I can say about them is that they made a pretty good notebook a few years back, but that was then and this is now an right now their quality has gone out the door due to their all their cost and corner cutting.

    Dear chazzy,
Sorry to hear all that is happening to you. I may have sounded like a cheerleader for Dell recently, for I always got a response from someone promptly. But I am new to this windows world and have not had any problems where I had to send something in for repair. Knock on wood.

Look at all the responses you got. They all have mostly IBMs - I had IBMs and only sold them because of either the bulk(T42p) or added accessories (X40 no burner/writer). The people I sold them to are happy with them. But all vendors (Dell, Sony etc are still vendors that rely on us) have their faults. I steer away from Sony from watching associates here in Hawaii swear at them. Some here have Dells in laptops that have gone astray in performance. I meet with at least 14 people who have laptops of various makes and all have some horror story to tell but they have work arounds or have done what you are contemplating - switching. Being an Apple fan since day one(too long ago), I am used to good service but again, there are posts/forums that have complaint against Apple- one group even sued Apple for display problems. Okay, sorry to have run off at the keyboard. I am using the Dell 700M and awaiting my AximX30 624MHz and am looking forward to using these machines for a long time - until the Powerbook G5 arrives.
    Sorry for the long post.
Take care, and good luck to your solutions.

I *HATE* Dells...laptops and desktops. So much for that. We are all sorry to hear about your experiences but I don't think you'll find anyone partial to any one system here. Most of us moderators were asked to help because Brian felt we help the readers of the forums, not because we have a love affair with Dell. I've never even owned a Dell (3 Sonys, 1 Toshiba, 1 Fujitsu, 1 IBM, 1 AST).

With respect to foriegn made parts...please remember that yes, although that Hitachi drive may have been manufactured and assembled in Japan, Nissan and Toyota keep a good number employed in the states assembling their products....It works both ways.

With respect to using your drive, they are all basically the same. You will find that not many companies include a lengthy section on using the drives. You could create a post in the Accessories forum and I'm pretty sure you'll find no shortage of help. You can also check out sites like http://www.cdrlabs.com . This is a CDR/DVDR resource and features LOADS of great information. You'll also find a good bunch of people that can answer hardware specific questions.

Again, sorry to hear about your issues, but you'll find that most people are unhappy with customer support...regardless of the company. Dell actually has the highest rated customer support team. If all you're unhappy about is a manual for the optical drive, I'd strongly suggest you use the resources available to you (this forum and others). With regards to your specific issue, I really don't think you'd have any easier time with any other company....and IBM uses foriegn made parts too!!

I thought I would try this notebook forum again MacMac your right my next laptop will say IBM, the only reason I bought the dell is because it has a wide screen configuration of 16 x 10 not a 16 X 9. I watched 13 Ghosts (1960) version on it last night. I don't mind black bars(I turn off the lights like it was at the pay/ticket Movie Theater) as that is the OAR for the anamorphic 2.35:1, I would hate having a 4:3 full frame boxy computer again. They were made before a lot of computer manufacturers went wide screen now we have choice. I choose wide screen of the 1940 NTSC that should have been changed when the first scope W/S "The Robe" came out on 2.55:1 the same scope as Disneys "20,000 Leagues under the Sea", not pan and scams fool frame 1.33;1 AKA 4:3.

Does anyone have a paper manual of the Inspiron 8600 to to sell?¿?
