Recently my laptop charger stopped working for no apparent reason. When i plug it in the light will shine green on the charger like normal until i insert it into the laptop and it will shut off, thus not allowing me to charge my laptop or use it :(

Is this an issue with the charger or the laptop itself? is there anyway to quick fix this? any and all advice is appreciated

    Probably a bad power brick.
Quick (only) fix is replacing the power brick.

It could also be the socket on the motherboard where you plug it in. If you bent this or something then it could be causing a short.

Hey, I had this very problem about 6 months ago on my 1530.

The *internal socket* was loose where the adapter go's and the battery would not hold a charge, yet the brick was still *active*.

I called Dell, and instead of having the internal socket soldered, they sent the Tech. to my house and he replaced my motherboard.

I also requested that they have the Tech. bring a new brick and adapter. and they did this for me. I wanted to make sure I had everything covered for any potential further problems. ;)

If you call Dell, I bet that they have the Techn. replace your Motherboard.

    Cin ;) :)

Except it sounded to me like the LED on the brick itself was turning off, so that tells us several things:
For certain we know that because the LED on the powerbrick is going off, the issue is not a broken powerjack in the conventional sense, as Cin is describing. The problems is between the start of the brick and the start of the laptop (which yes, would be the power jack and the near area)
Which leaves us with one of the following:
    1) As nizzy has said, this means you could have a short which is causing the brick to drop off and stop giving power. This is certainly possible, but I suspect this would kill the brick and unplugging it from the laptop would not let the LED turn back on.
    2) The brick has lost its ability to sustain a load. This happens all the time with desktop power supplies, and since a laptop powerbrick is the equivelant of a desktop powersupply, I don't find it hard to believe. You can test with a multimeter and a load tester if you have them. Test the voltage coming out of the brick - it will probably be normal. Putting on a load causes the voltage to drop off. This is what I believe is happening.

After i unplug the brick from the laptop the light does not go back on, it remains off until i unplug the brick from a power socket and re-plug it in.

    i hope that makes sense

I think it's a short in that case. I've seen a Dell power adapter behave the same way with a known short. It's even more likely if you can hear like a small popping sound when you plug it in.
