I just got my computer yesterday. My first thoughts were that this thing is huge! Much bigger than my HP Pavilion with the same screen size. I am glad I didn't get the bigger E1705. I wasn't expecting such a huge battery pack either!

I was very impressed with the build and the Truelife screen, however I was going crazy with all the pop-ups that kept coming up from the moment I powered it up! I didn't even get the chance to delete any junk off of there before I got the blue screen...twice! After that, I had to delete everything from Safe Mode, which worked. I got the XP Pro Instillation disk with it, and I was wondering what kind of disk this is. I am not too tech-savvy to re-install the whole system. But I was wondering if this disk had any bloatware on it, or if it was just the OS by itself. Any thoughts?

    Thanks!

Yes, it does say Operating System on top. There is no mentione of Recovery on there. But I didn't know if that was without all the Dell stuff. I guess it is. Thank you!

I believe its a clean install disk... the 'software and drivers' disk that should have came with your machine would have any additional software that came with your PC on it.

If you reformat your system, there are a couple things you should know.

    1. Reformatting your system will cause you to loose the Mediadirect functionality. Theres a disk you can get from Dell to restore it though.

    2. Reinstalling you OS will cause you to loose your Ctrl+F11 ability to restore the PC to its 'as delivered' condition.

Basically their are 2 special partitions on your hard drive... one contains a system restore option, so you can restore your computer to the way it was delivered... and the other one contains the media direct software.

The Boot setup of your PC supports these functions, but if you reinstall your OS you will have a clean boot setup that will no longer include this functionality.

    Just an FYI.

    Hi Alchemist,

I definately don't want to lose the Mediadirect, even though it's probably easy to ask Dell for it again. Is there any thread on here on what to delete from the registry? Even though I've uninstalled unwanted programs and the computer is pretty quick, I still the get the hourglass pretty often, letting me know that SOMETHING is still running.

Jasmine, you will only completely lose MediaDirect if you delete the small (~39 MB) partition. You will lose it's functionality until you repair it though. Basically, to repair it, you will have to download the repair iso from Dell's website and burn it to a CD. Then, follow the instructions included in the zip you downloaded. Note, you will need to get CyberLink, and Sonic from Dell separately. Sonic is the CD burning software that comes pre-installed.
Basically, the MediaDirect repair goes as follows (check the detailed instructions in the zip):

Once you have Sonic, to burn the iso image, you open sonic, click on data cd, then click on file (i think) and tell it to burn from image. This'll open a box for you to find the .iso file. You find where the file is located, and select it. Then, burn the disk. You need to insert the disk in the drive, restart windows, tapping the f12 key to bring up the boot menu. Then boot from cd. When the command prompt comes up type "cd\ md2". When this comes up, type "repair".

Note you may need to boot back into windows, then out and start media direct again, telling it to "delete restore partition" or something like that. It's really simpler than it sounds.
