This is my first laptop, will let you guys know what I think when I get it. What closed the deal for me, is I went to bestbuy and they carried 3 dells the XPS1330, 1420, and the 1520, they were all awesome and came home right away to order. The screens on all three looked just great, I am a little weary about it, but I think I will be alright.

Hey, that seems like a great deal and a good computer. I've never shopped for the Vostros, but it seems like a lot of computer for a little price.

just wondering ... why did you stick with the 1.4 ghz processor? I'm just about to pull the trigger on my own vostro purchase and I can't quite decide if I want to stick with the 1.4 or go whole hog and upgrade to the 2.2ghz. I like the idea of the extra room in the L2 cache, but I'm also frugal (cheap) enough to really love the idea of a $700ish core2duo laptop.

Anyway ... good for you! I hope you put up a nice long post with your comments after you get it and put it through it's paces!

p.s. good choice going with xp. That's definitely the way I'm going to go.

I went with the lowest end processor because I believe that it will be all I need, my current desktop of three years is a 2.6 celeron, and this new laptop should just smoke it to death!

I always go with lowest speed of the top series on the matter of CPU.

I went with XP on my new system, too. I was looking to spend about what you did, but got carried away. lol You can see my config in my sig line. I paid 1,280 US for mine with the below and Dell Complete Care (or something like that) for three years.

My desktop is older than yours. It has a Celeron 700 MHZ processor with only 128 MB of memory! I'll be a nice change.

I'm wondering why you think your new 1.4 will smoke your 2.2? I mean, it's not like two 1.4 cores total 2.8, is it? I've read that it's not. Then some people say that it is...

Interesting. I've heard this before from others and it makes a lot of sense.

I don't plan on gaming, but I do plan on running visual studio and sql server. I thought these apps might benefit from the extra speed and L2 cache. Are you planning on running any heavy apps or gaming with your system?

TX Free Bird: Nice system specs. I'm thinking of ordering almost the same specs in a vostro 1400 (I might go to 2.2 ghz, I'm definitely on the fence on clock speed).

It would be great if you posted a little review when you get your system.

I just got my Vostro 1400 from Dell.ca and I'm in love. What a great little machine. I was really close to going the XPS route, but couldn't justify the extra cost and a good 1400 deal appeared so I ordered. And, as a bonus, I ordered the 5270 and got a 5470 processor at no extra charge.
    Things I like:
Windows XP. I don't mind Vista (unlike the rest of the world), but XP is just fine because I can go with lower specs on the computer (such as only 1GB of RAM).
The Build. Very nice and feels like it will really last. It is quite small too (compared to my old Inspiron 600m) and not so heavy too. Can't complain there.
The Screen. I went with the WXGA+ and am very happy with it. Very sharp, not grainy and looks lovely.

The One Thing I Don't Like:
The insanely bright blue LEDs right at the front. They hurt my eyes...

I'm very happy I went with this machine, plus the lack of bloatware made it much easier to set up too. And in Canadian terms it was a steal too - $670 with a 160 GB hard drive.

I think you will be very happy with your choice.

I was just window shopping on the dell site and I noticed that the 1.4 all the way through the 2.0ghz intel core 2 duo processors all have the same cache (2 mb) and fsb (800mhz). I don't know how I missed that. I'm seriously thinking of going with the 5270 (1.4ghz) processor now.

I will let you guys know what I think of the 1.4 c2d VS my 2.6 celeron when I get the computer in two weeks, but from what I heard this processor is even better then a 3ghz P4.

I do plan to do some light gaming battlefield 2 (or 2142), and UT 3, I currently don't have the games, when I get them I will post screen shots with FPS etc Most of the computers use will be internet, email, chats, watching DVDs, and a travel machine hence my order of the 9cell for long battery life.

With the 1520s being offered with XP, I had to go up to 2.0 to get the FSB speed. Otherwise, I might have gone with 1.66 or 1.83. I didn't want the 1.60, because it was a dual core Pentium. I wanted the new Core 2 Duo.

Then for 50 dollars or so you could step up a bit. As the Boy Scouts say, be prepared.

Sure, I can post a review when I get the machine.

I ordered and cancelled about five different systems (before they were shipped) just because I couldn't make up my mind. lol

    Happy hunting...

Best wishes for you getting a nice one! I would imagine a Vostro will have few if any issues. Let us know when it arrives... :)

I have a 1.6GHz T5470, not THAT much faster than the 1.4GHz, but it most definitely smokes the 3GHz P4 I have at work, even in simple tasks such as MP3 encoding, it is almost twice as fast.

Did any of you guys have to put a business when you ordered yours? I am getting a 1500 and it says that I need a business name to order it.

I bought my 1520 through the EPP, so I had to. If you are buying a Vostro, you may have to since it is a business machine even if you don't go the EPP route. I don't know. If you're not doing EPP, you could just make up a name like iamkion's Graphic Design or something...
