    Hey guys

I have just bought my first full price game as I used to buy second hand, but even the COD4 second hands were expensive, so I thought I would treat myself.

    I have a XPS M1530
    8600GT Graphics
    3gb ram
    vista 32 o/s
    T8300 Penryn.

Would this game be ok on high settings or should I go medium, also anything I need to do first eg. updates ect. ect.

Thanks so much cant wait until the kids go to bed.

    :D

I won't have my XPS until May, but I have Call of Duty 4 (Steam version) and you should already download all the new updates, as you can't play online if you don't have the latest version

definitely download the updates. also update your graphics card drivers (from laptopvideo2go.com)

go for the latest whql (174.74)

other than that, just set the resolution up to 1024x640 or 1280x800, and tick on some of the graphics options in the menu to your liking.

I can run it at 1280x800 everything on max with 30FPS+ on an overclocked 8600m GT DDR2 and a T9500, so you'll be fine given the better graphics card.

I get the same thing out of my 1520 when I had the t5250, a little more fps with the t7250.

You might have to play around with some drivers and maybe give it a slight overclock, but once you do, it will run great at 1280x800

    hey

    Thanks for all your replies.

Do I just download the updates straight from the game or do I have to go to a special site?

    Thanks again

    I get mine from filefront.com

Make sure to go in order, your game can get real screwed up if you don't.

    Hey

    Sorry to double post.

Put the game in last night and played for about 30 min, up until I was knocked out and driving in the car in the back seat through the afgan village, then all of a sudden my game just went black and started repeating its self. I then had to lift my laptop and finally after 5 minutes it came back on.

But after I turned the game off my temp never went above 62 and I play on a hard wood surface with a 9cell battery, It done this with FEAR as well.

Am I doing something wrong ?

    DELL XPS M1530
    T8300 Penryn
    8600gt DDR3 256MB
    VISTA 32BIT
    3GB RAM
    UK BASED

Thanks so much for your time and help guys

I think you just overheated it.

    Hey

I think that but how does a laptop overheat with a new T8300 Penryn air going through bottom and brand new laptop, so nu dust.

It only went to 60-65 degrees, can it overheat at that temp?

    Thanks again

No.. that temp is fine. I usually get up to 73-74 degrees when playing COD4 for an hour or so. I notice if I use the 9 cell battery or a book that will raise the back end of the notebook, the temps stay in the low to mid 60's.

    Thanks for that.

I do have a 9 cell, which raises the back, I can understand why my computer keeps crashing on games.

I have the nvidia driver that is on dell, which if official and up to date.

And my specs more than meet the recomended specs of the game.

Again it did this on fear as well as now COD4.

My screen just turns black and starts studdering like a record du du du du du

    something like that anyway.

Should I return my laptop, maybe a faulty card?

    got the driver from dell.

Cant get on with that laptop to go, i dont know what im looking at or downloading, I got a £800.00 = $1600.00 laptop and dont want to mess with it too much.

If I really need to update my drivers for the card above 169? i think thats what i got anyway, what do I need, are they stable, and please can you send me a link.

Will need to work for UK (first time gamer first laptop as well)

    Thanks

From what I've read the DELL graphics drivers are VERY poor. I'm at work, but maybe someone can write you out a quick guide to downloading and installing the laptopvideo2go drivers, as they are very stable.

I run COD4 at 1440x900, all settings to max (but no AA at all), and in the single player mode, the min framerate is about 25FPS. It hits 25 a lot on the sniper level particularly. Indoor sections, often well above 60....ive seen 90FPS sometimes. I would say the average is around 40ish. That's pretty good for having all settings high.

However, on multiplayer, I always lower the settings. Usually I have shadows and spec maps turned off, plus some other config tweaks. Unfortunately, you need to run without most of the eye candy if you want to keep a good high framerate, which is pretty much essential for online shooters.
