*EDIT* - Downgraded RAM to 256 MB
New Price: $1192

That's good. It is the one I wanted. But since there was a 40% off coupon, I got the XPS gen2.
-
i guess that's pretty good
-
I thought I saw Dell was going to have $750 off 1499 again starting Monday.
-
Call Dell and modify your order before it ships. Downgrade the RAM to 1 DIMM, it'll save you money, especially because you can put a gig of Kingston DDR2 533 PC2-4200 in for $100 shipped from Newegg. Never upgrade your RAM through Dell, they rape you on prices. Not to mention the 6000 comes with DDR2 400 PC2-3200 which is slower anyway and doesn't take advantage of your bus speed.
-
Oh, and if this drops your order down too low for the $750 off to work, upgrade to the 9-cell to bring it back up for the discount.
-
jlbrightbill: I was considering that when I ordered. Although I would still be over $1900 if I downgrading my memory, it would save about $70. You do have a point that with 100 I could buy a gig of 533. I am tempted to just let the order be, but if you can give me a link from newegg of the ram I may purchase that would work with this machine, I would glady consider re-ordering my laptop before its too late. Thanks again.

It's back up to $101, so $105 shipped. Definitely downgrade your RAM, you're literally flushing money down the toilet if you upgrade through Dell. Not only are you saving money, you're getting 533 instead of 400. I have 2x512 in dual channel, but benchmarks have shown the performance boost is negligible unless there's an 800 FSB to take advantage of the full capability of dual channel. Sonoma/Alviso with the 533 really doesn't benefit, so 1GB in single channel will perform just as well.
I have almost the same config as you, except shorter warranty (1 year- I'll extend later if I want), XGA, and 40gb (upgradable as well). The last $750 off $1499 deal didn't have the SXGA. My config is:
Pentium M 750 1.86
1GB (2x512) DDR2 533 PC2-4200 (dual)
X300 128
XP Pro (educational discount at my university - $8)
Office 2003 Pro (see above - $8)
Canon Pixma MP130 All-in-one
Mobile Edge Notebook Backpack
All for under $1000. I'm happy with it, and it works for college student usage. -
thanks I did downgrade the ram. I made an EXTREMELY dumb mistake while calling Dell. I waited the 30 minutes, and the hard-to-understand-outsourced employee asked for an order number. I asked if either one mattered (since I had two from the order since a dell printer came along with the laptop). Given rushing to give the first order number i can find after waiting 30 minutes while watching tv, and the hard to understdand employee, I gave the dell printer order number, and got sent back to the first menu(because there is a different # for accessories)!
So...I had to wait another 30 minutes, but this time I could undertsand what he was saying, and he helped me perfectly...so with 256 RAM downgrade the laptop came out to $1192 -
Dell's employees are...urgh, it's such a pain. I've spent a total of about 4 hours on the phone with them in the past week, and only one of them was good. I wish I had her ID # to ask for when I call again, because she spoke really good English, was friendly, and really made an effort to help me out. Unfortunately, most of them are pretty bad.
-
where do you live? Cuz the tax is so cheap
-
I live in Connecticut..On another note however..Dell has extended my estimated date for me to receive the laptop another 5 days because i downgraded the memory..instead of me getting it on the 18th of august..it is now the 25th the latest. I start my first day of school on the 26th...
-
-
Mine got here on the 26th when Dell told me the 2nd, so yes, they give you worst case scenario.
-
-
shootingstars: I already did call in and downgrage the RAM..just that they extended the arrival time by 5 days which is what I was curious about since I go to school a day after the new date they gave me. Hopefully the date Dell gave me (the 25th) will prove to be the worst case scenario. Especially because I would need time to reformat and install everything over in a small amount of time, since I see here on the boards it may be difficult if i dont have the right things.
-
Good news on the shipping atleast. Either Dell stepped up the shipping process and hired more assistants for the back to school surge of purchases, but I've watched my order go from the "build" step to "Boxing" just this day. I'm excited especially after they gave me the estimated delivery time for the end of the month.
-
If it's in boxing now, you'll have it by Friday, Monday-Tuesday at the latest. It's cake to install XP Pro, it took me just over 2 hours to have it completely installed, all my drivers updated, and Windows Updates installed. Factor in another 30 minutes if you want to back up your fresh install on DVD, and another hour to get your programs installed the way you like.
-
Just ordered one on the 27th and was told a shipping date of 8/15. Lappy ended up being delivered on the 2nd so I was pretty happy. I ordered a computer with a similar setup except 80gig hardrive, 512 1DIMM, and accidental care to go with 3 year warranty. Was about an extra 150.
-
Oh thats good then. I read somewhere on the Dell forums that if the boxing stage lasts a few days, the laptop is being shipped from Malaysia to Dell here after being test and built there. Therefore the laptop is still in its "boxed" stage before it arrives in the US and gets shipped out from the Nashville location.
Just bought I6000 10 minutes ago..what do you guys think?
