Okay, so I finally bit the bullet and made a decision after flip flopping between which laptop I wanted for the last few months. After looking at Fry's recently to get a better idea on size, I came to the conclusion that I wanted something with a 12 inch screen or smaller, and there was no way I could live with XGA resolution. WXGA is pushing it, but I figure 1280 wide will be acceptable. I did look at the Toshiba M200, which has a 12 inch SXGA screen, and I couldn't believe how great it was (I had heard small text might be a problem but it looked perfect to me). If that thing came with an optical drive, I would definitely have considered shelling out the extra dough. But since it was the only 12 inch or smaller laptop with a resolution greater than WXGA, I concluded that I'd have to go with WXGA. My primary criteria after that was price, and since the Dell 700m is relatively cheap, I started keeping an eye out for deals.

Today I found one on Ebay for $749 + $40 shipping. It was sort of a goal of mine to keep the total price below $800, so this looked good to me. It's a Pentium M 1.6 GHz. A couple of other factors that contributed were 768 MB of memory, and an 8 cell battery. It has a 30 GB drive, but I'm planning on purchasing a 120 sometime in the future, so the drive wasn't really an issue.

So for $789 total, did I get a decent deal? I'm mostly comparing it to the price I would have gotten if I had jumped on one of those $750 off $1500 coupons Dell offered a month or two ago. I think after tax I would have gotten a similar 700m for about $815. The benefit there would have been that I'd have gotten a new one, but this seller seems pretty legit, and the description says there are no dead pixels, etc., and the waranty is good through November.
